192213178Firenze: R. Bemporad & Figlio Editori 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Maschere nude volume V. 151 pp. Full light brown calf spine with four raised bands and red and black morocco labels lettered in gold. Signed and inscribed by Luigi Pirandello "Ad Alessandro Varaldo fraternamente Luigi Pirandello." Varaldo was a fellow playwright novelist and mystery writer: his book Il settebello is considered the first example of Italian detective novel. The tragic satire and savage humor that emerged through the story of a troubled couple disturbed early audiences accustomed to sentimental bourgeois comedy but the play reveals Pirandello's ability to exaggerate the realms of both apology and farce. Mild foxing to edges small laceration and short tear to the spine panel. A pleasing presentation copy from the 1934 winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. In the Italian language. ; Octavo; Signed by Author. R. Bemporad & Figlio, Editori hardcover

FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - BRAND NEW FLAWLESS COPY NEVER OPENED -- 217 pages -- REVIEW: Publishers Weekly: "This volume gathers 20 stories by the late Nobel laureate written between 1896 and 1935 and for the most part appearing here for the first time in English. As the title declares all tell of suicide and permeating the collection from the earlier tightly plotted and realistic works to the later more experimental and stylized stories is Pirandello's trademark existentialism: the view that life is a game of chance played with dice that are loaded toward tragedy. Most powerful and moving are the stories from Pirandello's middle years such as ``The Trip'' 1910 in which he delves deeply into his characters successfully conveying the passions and fears assaulting the sickly sheltered Adriana Braggi as she leaves her Sicilian village. Others from this period stand out as well including ``By Himself'' 1913 in which Matteo Sinagra creates his own funeral procession and ``While the Heart Suffered'' 1914 written in a stream-of-consciousness style. Overall however the book is uneven in quality. Many stories written before 1913 are not wholly forceful nor probing and the final two from 1934 and '35 are vague and unsatisfying. An awkward translation compounds the tales' weaknesses. Moreover it is questionable whether publishing 20 stories about suicide in one volumea decision apparently made by contemporary editors not Pirandellois even desirable. The repetition and lack of suspense especially in the less graceful works is burdensome." -- with a bonus offer-- . Dante Univ of Amer Pr paperback

197337582Kentfield CA: The Allen Press 1973. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. One of 137 copies of which 7 were hors commerce. The title page describes this book as a concise presentation of literature and book arts and crafts of England France United States and Italy. In their introduction the Press proprietors Lewis and Dorothy Allen write that their purpose was to present in one volume a sample of the literature and printing of these four countries by selecting four authors who were among the most noteworthy fiction writers of the past century. Each author's fiction was illustrated by a noted artist of his country and printed on paper made in that country. The typefaces were chosen to suit the text. The works selected were Joseph Conrad's "The Lagoon" illustrated by Blaire Hughes Stanton; Gustave Flaubert's work is "The Legend of Saint Julien" illustrated by Michèle Forgeois; the work from Henry James is his "The Jolly Corner" illustrated by Joseph Low; and Luigi Pirandello's work is "The Annuity" illustrated by Paolo Carosone. This handsome and ambitious book was set in types by hand on papers printed damp on a Columbian handpress. In the original front cover binding of gray paper with a vertical brown paper strip down the front cover and a brown paper rear cover. Titling to spine. Very good plus with a spot of wear at the front of the tail of the spine and a very small spot of soil near the head of the spine.
