Folding traces inherent to being placed in an envelope a date inscribed in pencil by Carlo Rim probably that of the receipt of this letter. In this very fine letter of indulgent and touching tenderness for his old friend Carlo Rim with whom he is slightly at odds Marcel Pagnol shows less clemency for the theatrical criticisms of Roger Martin du Gard: ""Mon cher Jean Je reçois un mot de toi - Il est petit mais il me fait grand plaisir. Il y a eu entre nous quelque pique imbécile. Partageons en la responsabilité et embrassons nous Folleville ! J'ai d'ailleurs des nouvelles de toi par les littéraires - où je regarde tes dessins chaque semaine. Je t'avoue d'ailleurs que c'est la seule raison pour laquelle j'achète ce journal dont la page des théâtres est en général absolument hilarante par l'incompréhension absolue de M. Martin du Gard. Il a d'ailleurs été très gentil pour moi mais il s'y connait autant que moi en peinture. Quand déjeune-t-on ensemble Téléphone donc à Gras qui est aux Variétés tous les jours de 3 à 7. Ambitieux et optimiste Pagnol vient tout juste de présenter la pièce qu'il espère voir bientôt jouer Les Marchands de gloire et en raconte la première représentation privée à son ami Julien Coutelen : c'est un compagnon de Fortunio la première revue fondée par Pagnol dont le premier numéro avait paru le 10 février 1914. La revue réunira entre autre Jean Ballard le futur directeur des Cahiers du Sud - dont Fortunio n'est autre que l'ancêtre. Fils d'un riche minotier Julien Coutelen partage avec Pagnol la passion des inventions ils ont ensemble imaginé plusieurs « trouvailles » dont un jouet d'enfant pour lequel ils déposèrent un brevet. Parisien depuis 1921 Pagnol le rejoindra à la capitale à partir de septembre 1922 après qu'il fut nommé répétiteur au Lycée Condorcet. Il se lance peu après dans l'écriture de ses premières pièces jusqu'à être satisfait de la version achevée des Marchands de gloire. Après des débauches d'énergie il en donne une représentation privée qui lui ouovrira espère-t-il les portes de la gloire : : « . Je travaille comme une brute sanguinaire et chaque jour j'écris une vingtaine de pages. Le moment s'approche où nous verrons les feux de la rampe ; tu conçois donc mon agitation à l'approche d'une date qui va décider de ma carrière de ma fortune etc. Un jour Trébor nous invite à lire notre pièce devant un groupe de hautes notabilités parisiennes à qui il désirait offrir la primeur de la pièce : soirée de grand gala suivie d'un souper à minuit. Nous décidons que la pièce sera lue par Simon. Aussitôt préparatifs. Simon va chercher des souliers vernis chez un copain à la porte de Vincennes. Il prend des gants chez un autre un smoking chez Nivoix une pochette au Conservatoire une montre chez le voisin : bref une vraie souscription. Pour moi je m'équipe avec le smoking de Bellon les bretelles de Simon une cravate de Nivoix. Quant à Nivoix il vole acheter des cols et des manchettes une paire de chaussettes et s'ingénie à tirer le meilleur parti possible d'une chemise de soie jadis splendide. Nous arrivons au rendez-vous dans un taxi payé par une cotisation. Appartements somptueux valets de chambre seigneuriaux. Dans une immense bibliothèque nous trouvons Monin propriétaire d'Houbigan Maire grand marchand de plumes Parisys Trébor la Belle Jickiss du Concert Mayol qui se montre toute nue chaque soir à 2000 personnes et qui paraissait gênée de se voir habillée devant tant de monde . Ajoute quelques femmes munies de diamants - O ma mère ! Quels diamants ! Comme des noix ! et de perles. Simon lit la pièce : succès triomphal gens estomaqués plein de respect. Trébor dit que je suis à Condorcet. La belle Jickiss me demande si j'aurais bientôt fini mes études . Les répétitions d'ensemble commencent mardi 12 mars. Nous passons dans la 1re semaine d'avril. Voilà. Succès ou non je suis tiré d'affaire au point de vue financier. Un four donnerait toujours 20 représentations soit 10 à 12.000 pour moi. Un succès c'est-à-dire 100 représentations avec du public donnerait pas loin de 100.000 avec la vente à l'étranger. Hip. Hurrah ! . » Contrat rempli pour Pagnol : à partir du 15 avril 1925 Pagnol fait jouer au Théâtre de la Madeleine ses Marchands de Gloire - sa première pièce sur les planches.
