Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear to the extremities. Jacket design by A. Ivancich. Jacket photograph by Paul Radkai. A nice example. Set in Venice at the close of World War II Across the River and into the Trees is the bittersweet story of a middle-aged American colonel scarred by war and in failing health who finds love with a young Italian countess at the very moment when his life is becoming a physical hardship to him. It is a love so overpowering and spontaneous that it revitalizes the man's spirit and encourages him to dream of a future even though he knows that there can be no hope for long. Spanning a matter of hours Across the River and into the Trees is tender and moving yet tragic in the inexorable shadow of what must come. 19357651New York: Charles Scribner 1935. 1st. Cloth. Good/Good. An unusual copy of the 1935 1st edition 2nd state without the "A" on the copyright page. From the personal library of noted literary critic Maxwell Geismar who among other things wrote the Introduction to Eldridge Cleaver's "Soul on Ice". Geismar has heavily highlighted this copy --clearly his working copy-- in color pencil and has made several extensive margin notes. A fascinating glimpse into the working methods of a major mid-century American critic. A presentable "starter" copy to boot. The boards are relatively clean the binding solid the dustjacket --in spite of a few chips and some creasing-- is 95% present.

Charles Scribner hardcover books
193718625New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1937. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good -. A solid presentable copy of the 1937 correct 1st edition with the the letter 'A' and the Scribner colophon to the copyright page. Tight and VG with bright gilt-titling along the spine and rubbed lettering to the front panel. Offsetting at the inner hinges and a very small amount of staining/soiling to the margins of several of the preliminaries. And in a bright price-intact VG- dustjacket with a degree of creasing and soiling to tha panels closed tears along the front flap and the front spine hinge and fairly sizeable abrading affecting some of the text at the front flap itself. Still though attractive and a very suitable "starter" copy.

Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books
1929119033New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1929. First edition of this early Hemingway classic which established him among the American masters. Octavo original black cloth and bronze title labels to the spine and front panel. With the legal disclaimer on the verso of the dedication page. In very good condition with the front panel of a facsimile dust jacket adhered to the front pastedown and newspaper clippings regarding the work and its author adhered to the front a rear endleaves. Written when Ernest Hemingway was thirty years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield--weary demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion--this gripping semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times to get the words right. Charles Scribner's Sons hardcover books

1932402431Milwaukee: Casanova Press 1932. Light rubbing to slipcase a pale offset on endpapers; the book bright and fresh. Tall 8vo. 53 1 pp. Photographic portrait of Faulkner mounted as frontispiece. Original printed wrappers the rear wrapper printing Ernest Hemingway's poem "Ultimately"; publisher's board slipcase. FIRST EDITION LIMITED ISSUE number 483 of 525 numbered copies. This was the first book issued by Milwaukee's Casanova Press designed by Paul Romaine who he states on the colophon "is obviously very unlike Aldus or Bodoni but who is very young and has many years to correct the glaring defects herein of composition." The articles and poems in Salmagundi first appeared in the New Orleans' magazine The Double Dealer and were reprinted with Faulkner's permission. The inclusion of Hemingway's poem on the rear wrapper was done as "just a whim" but "a whim inspired by one of the oddest coincidences in modern literature: William Faulkner's poem Portrait and Ernest Hemingway's poem Ultimately both appear on page 337 of the June 1922 issue of The Double Dealer. The meticulous Louis Cohn will be glad to know this I am sure since he forgot to include it in his complete bibliography of Hemingway's works. He also left out the names of the horses from whence came the glue to bind Hemingway's books" Preface. In addition to Hemingway's poem Salmagundi contains five poems and three prose pieces by Faulkner. Massey 753; Petersen A11a.

Casanova Press unknown books
