In describing his feelings while reporting upon the Spanish Civil War Hemingway remarked that "I had no party but a deep interest in and love for the Republic." Hemingway's belief in the Republic may have circumscribed his ability to write as a journalist but it later blossomed into one of his best novels FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS. The protagonist is a teacher who becomes an anti-fascist guerrilla fighter a tragic and disillusioned US hero in the apex of Hemingway's often imitated style. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original tan cloth stamped in black to front board red spine label with black lettering. In original unclipped $2.75 pictorial jacket. In original light grey slipcase with mounted pictorial labels. The book has a clear film protective cover that has remnants of scotch tape still attached. There is some wear to this cover but it is intact. The yellow cloth cover has a colour illustration that is bright and alert. The covers have sunning to the spine and to the top runs. There is mild shelving wear. The frontis and end pages have tape residue. The contents are thrilling vigorous and confident. The pages are clean clear exciting visceral. The first free page has a reproduction of an 1845 bull-fight poster. The book has a silk bookmark attached.
