THE FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE THE ORIGINAL FIRST STATE DUSTJACKET. Hemingway’s longest work now regarded as a masterpiece. Hemingway knew the subject matter of this tale well-- the Spanish Civil War. The tale’s universal theme-- that the loss of liberty in one place means a loss for everyone everywhere-- has never been better stated than in this great book.<br> 'Ernest Hemingway wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls in Havana Cuba; Key West Florida; and Sun Valley Idaho in 1939. In Cuba he lived in the Hotel Ambos Mundos where he worked on the manuscript and the novel was finished in July 1940 at the Inter Continental New York Barclay Hotel in New York City and published in October. It is based on Hemingway's experiences during the Spanish Civil War and features an American protagonist named Robert Jordan who fights alongside Spanish guerillas for the Republicans. The characters in the novel include those who are purely fictional those based on real people but fictionalized and those who were actual figures in the war. Set in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range between Madrid and Segovia the action takes place during four days and three nights. For Whom the Bell Tolls became a Book of the Month Club choice sold half a million copies within months was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and became a literary triumph for Hemingway.<br> The book's title is taken from the metaphysical poet John Donne's series of meditations and prayers on health pain and sickness written while Donne was convalescing from a nearly fatal illness published in 1624 as Devotions upon Emergent Occasions specifically Meditation XVII. Hemingway quotes part of the meditation using Donne's original spelling in the book's epigraph. Donne refers to the practice of funeral tolling universal in his time.<br> "No man is an Island intire of it selfe; every man is a piece of the Continent a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea Europe is the lesse as well as if a Promontorie were as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee."<br> The point made by the choice of title and epigraph is that Spain's change from democracy to fascist dictatorship the outcome of the Spanish Civil War of 1936–1939 is important to and affects everyone not just Spaniards. Furthermore the title and epigraph can be interpreted as a reference to the themes of death within the novel particularly between the characters of Robert Jordan and Anselmo.' Mary Welsh Hemingway 1908â€“1986 was an American journalist and writer who became Ernest Hemingwayâ€™s fourth wife in 1946 and remained his partner until his death in 1961. Having worked as a foreign correspondent during World War II she brought professional experience and organizational skill to Hemingwayâ€™s later life accompanying him during his final years in Cuba Europe and Idaho. After Hemingwayâ€™s death Mary Welsh Hemingway played a central role in shaping his posthumous reputation by editing and overseeing the publication of several unfinished works. Each piece is in fine to near fine condition. The pieces each measure 10 inches by 8 inches. Ernest Hemingway 1899â€“1961 was one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century whose concise prose style and exploration of universal themes reshaped modern literature. 2070Fort Lauderdale FL: S.i. 1984. First Edition. Self-published draft of the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist's play set in Hemingway's home in Cuba during the 1950's. In addition to working for South Florida's Sun Sentinel de Groot was also a member of the award-winning team that covered the Kent State shootings in 1970. de Groot's depiction of Hemingway relied more on "the man and his exploits" than his literary legacy and the play was a result of his life-long fascination with the author. The play premiered at the Colony Theater in Miami Beach in 1987 starring veteran Miami-based actor William Hindman as Hemingway. Ten years later the play ran for 73 performances at the Douglas Fairbanks Theater in New York directed by John Henry Davis and starring Len Cariou as Hemingway. Rare; we find no copies for sale in the trade and while OCLC notes 2 later editions of the play 1988 by Lime Tree Productions and 1989 by the Hemingway Western Studies Center Boise State University this self-published edition is not found in the holdings of any member institution. Quarto; printed sheets rectos only comb-bound into illustrated card wrappers; vi878pp. Inscribed by de Groot to a rare bookseller on the title page and dated 1988. Holograph date of "Jan.'88" in ink to upper right corner of title page and front wrapper else Fine. Laid in is a 1-page TLS from de Groot to the recipient discussing rights to the play changes to the script and the play's premiere in Miami FL along with an inquiry regarding signed Hemingway books for sale.
