50075Charles Scribner's Sons. New York. 1964 First US edition First impression. Roy8vo XXII 211pp. A tight hardcover binding in deckled grey boards with a gold Hemingway signature on front board with a light brown cloth binding with a gold title on the spine. The surface of the boards has been scarred on edges by a previous poorly alligned protective cover from a private library with associated old tape marks on boards and both ep's and the attractive first edition unclipped US d/w is in very good condition with top edge spine chipping being its only fault now protected in removeable clear archival covering There is a slight anterior lean and minor flecking on edges with top edge faded olive green as issued but no d/w repairs present or required. internally the pages are undamaged and clean devoid of inscriptions and notes though as described the endpapers are a little battle scarred with the book being overall well loved but still in very good condition. These small stories are really a memoir about the wonderful days the author spent in Europe particularly in Paris with his first wife as an expatriate journalist and writer in the 1920's. Deceased in 1961 the book was published posthumously in 1964 and the memoir references together with some amazing b/w photos many important notable figures such as Sylvia Beach Hilaire Belloc the Fitzgeralds James Joyce and Gertrude Stein. Many bars cafes and hotels still exist and can be visited today in Paris. The fascinating rediscovery of his 1920's notebooks in the basement of the Ritz in a case made for him by Louis Vuitton of course enabled the emergence of this fascinating memoir that really is a must for any Hemingway devotee and in many ways more important to devour than some of his more famous novels. Written between sojourns in Cuba from 1957 then Spain then Idaho to finish it in Cuba again in 1960 it concerns the years 1921 to 1926 in Paris. Charles Scribner's Sons. New York. 1964 (First US edition, First impression) hardcover
