br. Nel 1948, A.E. Hotchner va all'Avana per chiedere a Ernest Hemingway di scrivere un articolo per la rivista "Cosmopolitan". L'articolo non si materializza, ma da quel primo incontro fino alla morte di Hemingway nel 1961, Hotchner e l'autore vincitore del premio Nobel sviluppano una profonda e duratura amicizia. Fanno baldoria a New York e a Roma, corrono con i tori a Pamplona, cacciano in Idaho e pescano nelle acque di Cuba. Ogni volta che si incontrano, Hemingway parla di una sorprendente varietà di argomenti, dall'arte del daiquiri perfetto alla Parigi degli anni '20 fino alla sua infanzia a Oak Park, Illinois. E, fortunatamente, Hotchner prende nota di tutto. In questo libro, dunque, egli ci racconta dettagli affascinanti sulla vita quotidiana di Hemingway e documenta i suoi ricordi di Gertrude Stein, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Martha Gellhorn, Marlene Dietrich, e molti dei più impor - tanti artisti e celebrità del Ventesimo secolo. Negli ultimi anni, quando la cattiva salute dello scrittore comincia a influenzare il suo lavoro, Hotchner ritrae teneramente e onestamente i valorosi tentativi di Hemingway di sconfiggere la depressione che lo avrebbe portato a togliersi la vita.
