Often considered "the premiere American war novel" of the First World War it is based on Hemingway's personal experiences in the Italian campaigns of the First World War. The book details the experiences of Lieutenant Frederic Henry as he serves in the ambulance corps of the Italian army and his love affair with English nurse Catherine Barkley. It would be adapted for the stage in 1930 by Laurence Stallings followed by film adaptations in 1932 and 1957.
