1931EH314New York: William Faro Inc. 1931 Illustrated with thirteen plates including a frontispiece. First edition first printing. Signed and inscribed by Ernest Hemingway to his cousin Ruth White Lowry on front free endpaper: "To Ruth. - This little monograph on Mr. Hoover's part in the Nurse Cavell scandal - with sidelights on his "relief" of Belgium - His connection with the sinking of the Lusitania and the abduction of Charley Ross are not made clear. - E. H." Publisher's blue cloth with paper label to spine lettered in black; lacking dust jacket. Very good or better with a few light scratches to front board very light toning to spine and label rubbing to spine label affecting "a" in "Strange" tiny chip to bottom of label text unaffected corners slightly bumped toning to endpapers and some smudging to Hemingway's inscription. Overall a unique inscription showing Hemingway's interest in politics. From the personal library of Hemingway's cousin Ruth White Lowry. The Strange Career of Mr. Hoover Under Two Flags is a survey of Herbert Hoover's pre-presidential career presented in a decidedly unflattering light and filled with accusations of corruption and other misdeeds. The book was one of a handful of smear books about Hoover published before the 1932 election geared toward undoing his reputation as "The Great Humanitarian" and "The Great Engineer." The project began when opportunistic ex-policeman James J. O'Brien approached John Hamill with the idea for the book. After Hamill completed it publisher Samuel Roth who had been jailed three times for dealing in obscene literature agreed to publish it under his William Faro imprint. In 1932 James J. O'Brien sued Hamill over profits from the book and Hamill subsequently repudiated the book and signed an affidavit stating that "while the material gathered for the book contained statements that were true in themselves they were used in such a way as to lead to false conclusions concerning the President" The New York Times January 5 1933. In Hemingway's inscription he mentions the "Nurse Cavell scandal." Edith Cavell was a British nurse who was executed by Germans in German-occupied Belgium for helping Allied soldiers escape. Her execution became a source of outrage for the Allies and was heavily propagandized. In The Strange Career of Mr. Hoover Hamill suggested that Hoover could have saved Nurse Cavell but failed to do so. This was one of the aspects of the book that Hamill later admitted was not true with the above-mentioned New York Times article stating "Hamill swore he learned nothing in Belgium to justify any inference that Miss Cavell's life might have been saved by Mr. Hoover and said he had caused similar false inferences to be drawn from other statements in the book ". The tenor of the inscription in this copy seems to indicate that Hemingway disliked Hoover. Further proof may lie in Hemingway's incendiary "Who Murdered the Vets" essay 1935 about the government's callousness toward the Bonus Army: while directed toward the Roosevelt administration the gross mistreatment of the Bonus Army began under Hoover's leadership. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good. New York: William Faro, Inc. hardcover

1938124238Cleveland: The J. B. Savage Company 1938. First edition first issue of Hemingway's commentary for the classic 1937 Joris Ivens film depicting the horrors of the Spanish Civil War; one of between 50 and 100 copies issued with the pictorial F.A.I. banner endpapers. Octavo original tan cloth printed in black and orange illustrated by Frederick K. Russell. One of 1000 numbered copies this is copy number 29. Introduction by Jasper Wood. In near fine condition. An exceptional example. While in Spain covering the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance Hemingway agreed to take part in the funding of a to raise money for the Loyalist Republican cause in the war in collaboration with several other literary figures including John Dos Passos Lillian Hellman Archibald MacLeish and. Dorothy Parker. The resulting film The Spanish Earth was directed by Joris Ivens based upon commentary by Hemingway and Dos Passos and narrated by Orson Welles. Cleveland Heights High School student Jasper Wood acquired the rights to publish 1000 copies of Hemingway's commentary for the film in 1938. Upon seeing the first issue of the book from the press Hemingway wired Wood objecting to Wood's introduction because it gave him credit for the film which he felt belonged to Ivens and photographer John Ferno. He also objected to the large banner of the anarchist group F.A.I. Federacion Anarquista Iberica on the endpapers. A second issue was then bound with plain tan endpapers and a statement from Wood on the rear pastedown referring to Hemingway's objections and noting: "Hemingway insisted that his share of the profits for this text be paid directly to Almuth Heulbrun the widow of Dr. Werner Heilbrun who was killed in action in Spain." "In a letter to the bibliographer Jasper Wood estimated that there were between 50 and 100 copies of the first issue" Hanneman A15a. The J. B. Savage Company hardcover books

Text of the narration for the sound track that Hemingway contributed to the 1938 film of the same name about the Spanish Civil War which broke out in 1936 with a military uprising in Morocco on July 17 triggered by events in Madrid. Within days Spain was divided in two: a "Republican" or "Loyalist" Spain consisting of the Second Spanish Republic within which were pockets of revolutionary anarchism and Trotskyism and a "Nationalist" Spain under the insurgent generals and eventually under the leadership of General Francisco Franco. "Late in 1936 while Hemingway was working on To Have and Have Not the North American Newspaper Alliance offered to hire him to report on the civil war being fought in Spain. The literary fruits of this undertaking in addition to the news stories Hemingway produced to fulfill his contract were the script for the narration of a pro-Republic documentary film The Spanish Earth; a relatively unsuccessful play The Fifth Column published with his collected stories as The Fifth Column and the First Forty-nine Stories; a handful of short stories about wartime Spain and his most successful novel in more than a decade For Whom the Bell Tolls." Literary Encyclopedia The Spanish Earth was published by a precocious Cleveland high-school student named Jasper Wood who was so moved on seeing the film that he convinced Hemingway to allow publication of the text. Fewer than a hundred copies were bound this first issue is a notable Hemingway rarity before Wood made the change to plain tan end papers the second issue. N. B.
