Recueil de différents articles parus dans des journaux et des revues (Revue contemporaine, Revue de l'Instruction publique, etc. L'ouvrage distribue les chapitres en deux grandes parties : Études philosophiques ; Études littéraires. Les études portent notamment sur "la religion positiviste" (Auguste Comte), Jean Reynaud, Le XVIIIe siècle et le parti de l'avenir, William Channing, le sensualisme, Stendhal (p. 235 à 333), Toussenel, Henri Heine, etc. Quelques piqûres.
