1856170801New York: G. P. Putnam & Company 1856. Heine brought a gentle panoramic romantic realism First edition superior issue the "extra fine edition on Bristol boards in portfolio". Only one other copy of this issue still with the publisher's portfolio and the atlas in the original wrappers has appeared in commerce in the past four decades. Wilhelm Heine 1827-1885 was appointed as the Perry Expedition's official artist aged only 25. Sketching and painting in watercolour he "brought a gentle panoramic romantic realism to both the selection and execution of his subjects. His landscapes were invariably scenic. Where people were concerned he preferred them in substantial numbers. He rarely lingered on the 'exotic' did not dwell much as happened later on various social 'types' and did not seek out the sensational" MIT Visualizing Cultures. Heine's informative personal account of the expedition was published in Leipzig in 1856. The three-volume official narrative 1856-58 employed 63 of his artworks. In Bennet's view however the plates in Graphic Scenes are "many times finer". The nine views include one of "Macao from Penna Hill" two drawn in Canton and six of Loochoo Yokohama and Shimoda. The superior issue retailed at $12. When complete this is often found with the text rebound or with the text and plates housed in a later portfolio. The closest comparator sold at Sotheby's New York in April 2012 which included the letterpress in the original cloth-backed wrappers and a red half morocco portfolio. Putnam & Co. also sold an ordinary issue with tinted plates only for $6. Of these exceedingly RARE lithographs one prints is now offered: PASSING THE RUBICON documents the event of July 11 1853 wherein Lt. Silas Bent from the Mississippi's first cutter confronted Japanese guard boats and a coastal Junk. This is illustrated in S. Morrison: "OLD BRUIN" COMMODORE MATTHEW CALBRAITH PERRY on p.327. This scene shows the American sounding party at work on Monday morning July 11th ".when a flotilla of thirty to forty guard boats filled with soldiers who presented quite a bristling front with their spears and matchlocks while their lacquered caps and shields flashed brightly in the sun confronted the flag launch under charge of Lt. Bent & the senior Japanese officer made minatory gestures with his iron fan and yelled orders which nobody in the American launch understood. The Lieutenant anxious to avoid a crash altered his collision course but dispatched another boat to the Mississippi to ask Capt. Lee to move closer. On the steamer's approach the guard boats retired. And Perry named the nearest point of land 'Point Rubicon' because no foreign ship had passed it for three centuries." See Morrison p.328. Heine 1827-1885 was the official artist on Perry's expedition to Japan in 1853-54. The sketches he produced of the places he visited and the people he encountered there together with the daguerreotypes taken by his colleague Eliphalet Brown Jr. formed the basis of the official iconography of the American expedition to Japan which remains an important record of the country as it was before the foreigners arrived in force. Upon his return to New York in 1855 he published several books: a collection of prints entitled Graphic Scenes of the Japan Expedition; and the 400 sketches which were included in Perry's official report as well as his memoirs Reiss um die Welt nach Japan Leipzig 1856. One of six deluxe copies numbered 4 of a sumptuous edition of seven poems on Islam by the French poet writer and publisher Maurice Heine 1884-1940. The entire edition comprised 77 copies the first six numbered 1-6 being deluxe copies printed on dyed Japanese paper and including the frontispiece in three versions one painted on parchment and highlighted with gold. The frontispiece an Arabic text surrounded by flowers was designed and drawn by the Algerian miniature painter Mohammed Racim 1896-1975 founder of the Algerian school of miniature painting that still exists. The poems included are: La demeure harmonieuse Dans la maison moresque Palais d'Islam Le voyage en faience Le cyprès Alger-aux-barbares and La mort d'Alger.The work opens with a half-title printed in blue followed by a blank leaf a leaf with the privilege another half-title three frontispieces the title-page and a dedication followed by the prologue and the seven poems. It closes with a colophon noting the different copies of the book followed by: "Exemplaire no. 4. Imprimé pour le docteur Pierre Astruc".With a presentation inscription to Pierre Astruc: "à Pierre Astruc avec toute l'affection de ton ami dévoué Maurice Heine". Large 4to. 31.5 by 24 cm. 83 2 pp. With 35 lithographic plates six of which are hand-colored and nine of which are signed by Pascin. Also signed by him on the limitation page. The cover also has a partly colored illustration by Pascin done on the vellum. This book was Pascin's first book project. The satirical Heine novel first published in 1833 actually was the inspiration for Wagner's "Der Fliegende Hollander" or "The Flying Dutchman". Pascin was born in Bulgaria was active in Paris for much of his career although becoming an American citizen and working in the U.S. as well. The illustrations in this book have a deliberately naive quality almost as if done by a child. Condition: short tear of vellum along lower front joint 2 to 3 cm in length. Typical yet slight bowing of the vellum and a touch of lifting of the vellum from the boards. Minor darkening of the vellum leaves within along the edges. Paul Cassirer unknown

19210053731921. Hardcover. Very Good. Exquisite and delightful manuscript account of a happy and prosperous marriage made as a commemoration on its Silver Anniversary which occurred in 1921. Folio. 38 by 27.5 cm. 10 leaves on card stock with original watercolored artwork on each page. Blue felt bevelled binding with stalks of tall grass painted in silver on the cover. The grass design repeats on the title page with the addition of cherubs and a highly ornamental painted placard bearing the title -- this placard is suspended from a stalk and held by one of the cherubs. The account begins with a young man Vienna leaving his love behind as he travels to Lyon. We are told how he misses his beloved and so follows their wedding in 1896. A stock market crash then leaves the desperate groom concerned about their future. The young family return to Vienna where he becomes a workaholic as his wife tends to the home filling it with bric-a-brac that speaks to their material well being. Finally there comes the anniversary celebration and the happiness from seeing their children grown and settled. This brief account doesn't do justice to the verse or paintings. The account is really just a few snapshots of their lives using words and pictures which work together to bring a dream-like glow to the reminiscences. Each page is framed by a decorative band of primarily blue set off by a floral festoon within it. Most pages have two illustrations with the verse written by a calligraphic hand. The illustrations are filled with a vigor and energy -- they almost seem to float above or hover over the page. We would guess that the anniversary couple's surname was Labin based on a door sign in the office scene and the company the husband worked for was named Abadie which may have been based in Paris. Beyond that we can not speak more specifically about the parties. Condition: the felt is rubbed and slightly sunned on front. The silver design is somewhat faded. Soiling along the bevelled edge. The first critical edition of the text and the first established directly from the autograph manuscript written by Donatien Alphonse François Marquis de Sade in the Bastille in 1785. The manuscript composed in minute script on a continuous paper roll was long presumed lost following the storming of the Bastille before resurfacing in the late nineteenth century and coming into the hands of the Berlin physician and pioneering sexologist Iwan Bloch whose foundational but flawed 1904 edition first brought the text into print. Following Bloch's death the manuscript entered French ownership often associated with the patronage circle of Charles de Noailles and Marie-Laure de Noailles a descendant of Sade enabling the Sade specialist Maurice Heine to prepare the present edition under their support. Working directly from the autograph roll Heine produced a transcription of far greater fidelity than Bloch's accompanied by a substantial critical apparatus keyed to the original manuscript and including a photographic facsimile as frontispiece. Heine's engagement with Sade was both scholarly and personal: he first encountered the work through Bloch's edition in 1912 later recalling most notably in the 1933 'Minotaure enquete' organised by Andre Breton and Paul Eluard that discovery as decisive. Pascal Pia would subsequently credit Heine with establishing the modern text of Sade. Issued in a limited edition of 396 numbered copies this example is one of 300 on velin de Rives. It is here bound with the complete suite of sixteen lithographs by Andre Collot separately issued in a limited edition c. 1936 and intended for addition to subscribers' sets and unsold copies. The 120 Days of Sodom is Sade's masterpiece. A still unsurpassed catalogue of sexual abberrations and the first systematic exploration of the psychopathology of sex it was written during Sade's imprisonment and then lost after the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Later rediscovered the manuscript remained unpublished till an incomplete and not correct version was published in 1904 by the German psychiatrist Iwan Bloch under the pseudonym of Eugene Dühren. In 1929 Maurice Heine went to Germany to buy the text fot Viscount Charles de Nouilles. From 1931 till 1935 he published this text as the first real edition in a masterful and autorative way. .
