In March 1854 Perry had won access to the Japanese ports of Shimoda and Hakodate for American vessels with the sigining of the Kanagawa Treaty effectively beginning a process of opening Japan to the West. This fine lithograph is particularly appealing for the depiction of two cultures amiably interacting despite Perry's gunboat diplomacy with the charming added detail of a dog pausing on its way. .
