Original wrappers bound in original spine wrapper bound in at rear. Exterior hinges and edges rubbed. Interior clean.

Drawings by Madeleine Lemaire with scores by Reynaldo Hahn and a preface by Anatole France. The first book by the still unknown 25-year-old author a collection of prose poems and short stories. The book’s luxurious format and high price caused poor sales and as of 1918 the publisher Gaston Calmann-Lévy wrote to Proust that 1100 copies of the print run of 1500 copies remained unsold. Despite the financial issues the collection already bears the seeds of Proust’s unmistakable style which would of course come to full flower in À la Recherche du Temps Perdu whose first volume would not be published until seventeen years later. One copy of Correspondance Générale de Marcel Proust: Volume 4 suffers from a significant chip to the bottom half of the front cover which extends to the endpapers. Significant loss of cloth to spine of De Loti à Proust and Du Côté de Marcel Proust with remnants peeling. Spotting and discolouration throughout. Internally front hinge to most volumes reasonably weak leading to the odd delicate page more common to the front of the works. Otherwise generally firmly bound. Some small tears to page edges. A number of pages unopened to Du Côté de Marcel Proust Citations Reférences et Allusions de Marcel Proust and Correspondance Générale de Marcel Proust: Volume 2. Light spotting and discolouration throughout newer editions again being noticably cleaner. Good Éditions Lemarget; Éditions du Sagittaire; Gallimard; Librarie Plon; Amiot Dumont; J. B. 189687055Paris: Heugel & CieAu Ménestrel 1896. Fine. Heugel & Cie Au Ménestrel Paris 1896 28 x 37.50 cm en feuilles sous couverture First edition of this rare fascicle unnumbered and printed in a small number on Dutch laid paper. Illustrated with a portrait of Albert Cuyp after Maurin. In sheets under gray-green publisher's wrapper printed in black and red 5 pages of lithographed music Imp. Delanchy publisher's wet stamp on blank verso of last leaf. Very small nicks at head and tail of soft cover spine copy in pristine condition. Poetic and musical portrait of the Dutch Golden Age painter Albert Cuyp created jointly by Marcel Proust and Reynaldo Hahn who accompanies the writer's verses with a piano melody. This is the first of four portraits of painters that Proust and Hahn admired at the Louvre they devoted the following ones to Paul Potter Anton Van Dyck and Antoine Watteau. The luxurious fascicles were sold separately as indicated on the printed cover. For each of them Proust's verses specially composed for the occasion are printed in italic characters under reproductions of old engravings offering portraits of the painters evoked. The poems would be published the same year in the first edition of Plaisirs et les Jours. Hahn's melodies were premiered at Madeleine Lemaire's on May 28 1895 in the presence of prestigious spectators including Princess Edmond de Polignac Count Robert de Montesquiou José Maria de Heredia to whom the poems were dedicated Count Primoli as well as Anatole France. ""The interposition of the poem between painting and music has therefore proven to be an excellent conduit between the arts thanks to the fact that Hahn scrupulously respected the spirit of the poem while preserving his autonomy in his composition. The link between music and painting reveals itself after the other materials unite with each other; it is in this alliance that an astonishing complementarity then operates desired on the soothing light of Albert Cuyp"" Nicolas Vardon Precious copy of utmost rarity a superb manifestation of the immense artistic complicity between Marcel Proust and Reynaldo Hahn.
