Inspired by the "gusts of memory" that rise up within him as he dips a Madeleine into hot tea the narrator discusses his fear of going to bed at night. He is a creature of habit and dislikes waking up in the middle of the night not knowing where he is.He claims that people are defined by the objects that surround them and must piece together their identities bit by bit each time they wake up. The young Marcel is so nervous about sleeping alone that he looks forward to his mother's goodnight kisses but also dreads them as a sign of an impending sleepless night. One night when Charles Swann a friend of his grandparents is visiting his mother cannot come kiss him goodnight. He stays up until Swann leaves and looks so sad and pitiful that even his disciplinarian father encourages "Mamma" to spend the night in Marcel's room.</p> Buccaneer Books hardcover

425319Chatto and Windus. Hardcover. Good. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. Five volumes in the early Phoenix Library set of Proust's 'Remembrance of Things Past' 'In Search of Lost Time' - in classic C. K. Scott Moncrieff translation. Chatto and Windus began publishing Proust's novel in split up volumes through their Phoenix series in 1929 stopping in 1936 before all the volumes could be published deciding instead to republish the novel in it's entirety in a new edition in 1941. As such no Phoenix set of 'Remembrance' is complete - they end after 'Cities of the Plain.' Available here are five of the eight existing volumes:- Swann's Way Volume 1 - 1929 Edition- Swann's Way Volume 2 - 1929 Edition- Within a Budding Grove Volume 2 - 1929 Edition- The Guermantes Way Volume 1 - 1930 Edition- The Guermantes Way Volume 2 - 1930 Edition There is moderate bookworm damage to the first few pages of Within a Budding Grove - Volume 2 - as seen in the photos here. The damage is contained relatively to only the first couple pages - up to about page 6 of the novel proper. Considering their age the condition of the books is high - pages are clean with some slight pencil marks and the dust jackets are in good condition despite some slight tearing to their spine.
