All edges gilt. -- Front cover has substantial moisture stain roughly 2"x 2"; spine darkened; general rubbing/wear/discoloration esp. on back all around. Free endpapers chipping also other blank pages in rear. Rear inner hinge cracked but very strong. Substantial toning to some of the blank matter in front and rear. Former owner's inscription on front matter. Some foxing on title page and frontispiece. Otherwise interior tight and clean very little if any tanning and only occasional hints of foxing or other discolored spots. Overall in Good Minus condition. 584 pp. Hardcover. A popular picaresque novel that observes Gil Blas make his way through society this was described by Edgar Allan Poe as 'one of the finest narratives in the world' and Schopenhauer as one of the few novels that 'shows what is going one in the world'. With an engraved frontispiece portrait and two engraved plates in volume 1; three engraved plates in volume 2 all with tissue guards intact. Bindings firm with light rubbing to extremities and very minor cracking to spine. Light foxing to prelims otherwise generally nice and clean internally. From the library of Victorien Sardou: a rare surviving example of Sainte-Beuve's repudiated title First collected edition in a presentation binding. Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve published his biographical portraits anonymously and for private circulation among his circle of friends. For obscure reasons he had second thoughts and destroyed most copies. It is said that he did not keep a copy for himself and that his bibliographer Paul Chéron a librarian the Bibliothèque Nationale only became aware of its existence through a bookseller who had brought a copy back from England. From the library of French playwright Victorien Sardou 1831-1908 with the bookplate from his library at Château de Marly on the front pastedown. Sardou is the author of many popular 19th-century plays including La Tosca on which Puccini based his opera. Laid in are four early 20th-century bibliographical documents and press cuttings. Octodecimo 174 x 114 mm. Fine presentation binding by S. David in black full levant morocco spine in compartments with gilt titles direct top edge gilt turn-ins gilt with foliate tools and stars at corners marbled endpapers green silk bookmark. Early 20th-century press cutting and bookplate on one initial blank. Extremities lightly rubbed binder's blanks faintly dampstained foxing throughout. An excellent copy. unknown
