He is associated with neo-romanticism and is best known for his play Cyrano de Bergerac. Rostand's romantic plays provided an alternative to the naturalistic theatre popular during the late nineteenth century. Includes a bookplate from the private library of one Lesley Lewis and bound in original paper wraps. In French. In a half morocco binding with marbled boards. Externally very smart with some rubbing and wear to the spine and a mark to the front board. Internally firmly bound and clean with some age toning. In good minus dark green cloth boards with pale grey spine and pale grey titles to front. The boards look quite good but have cracked hinge and loose from page block; there are a few small marks to front; the spine ends and corners are bumped and frayed. The front free end paper is very tanned and has name of previous owner and date. The frot paste down is tanned around the edges; the rear end papers are fairly clean. Webbing from the spine visible from centre of both end papers. The text block is firm and even; the cut edges are very age-toned and the pages are unmarked and show some light creases from Prelims to about page 30. Not annotated.
