1898BB0526Boston New York London: Lamson Wolffe and Company 1898. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. First English Edition inscribed in an elegant hand by the translator on front fly-leaf: “Compliments of / Howard Thayer Kingsbury / November 1898.†Small 8vo: 2411pp. Publisher's original red cloth lettered and decorated in silver to spine and upper board with frontispiece portrait tissue guard still present of the actor Richard Mansfield in costume. A Near Fine or better spine slightly faded though silver remains bright and darkened page edges. Very scarce particularly in this condition. Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28 1897 and first translated into English by Kingsbury for Lamson Wolffe the same year. Mansfield was the first actor to play Cyrano in the United States in an English translation. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-1655 Rostand’s favorite writer. "Yet the character as portrayed by Rostand – with his excessively-enlarged nose his almost super-human duelling skills and his ability to improvise eloquent poetic speeches – is far from an exact portrait of the real-life Cyrano of the seventeenth century. . . . Possessed of a keen intellect with an insatiable appetite for reading and for learning he constantly experiments with when he is not challenging outright the established social scientific political and religious ideas of his day. This questioning satirising and ridiculing of contemporary authorities along with an open-mindedness to new concepts that remains strikingly modern has earned Cyrano a firm place amongst the libertin writers of seventeenth-century France." Internally nice and clean.

First edition 136th thousand same year as the first presentation-copy "à M. Eugène Zabel/ très cordial envoi -/ remerciement -/ et sympathie./ Edmond Rostand/ Octobre 98" of Rostand's masterpiece which against all odds became one of the most popular plays of the century and an overnight success throughout Europe. At the end of the 19th century in France as well as in the rest of Europe the industrialization was the force that dominated almost all aspects of society i.e. everything from politics and sociology to science art philosophy etc. And thus also literature and theatre in this period were products of this new power. This meant that the trend that became prevailing within literature and drama was that of realism which in France soon developed into naturalism. In the midst of this all-encompassing emphasis on objective documentation of everyday life which rejected romance idealization and dreaming of any kind emerged suddenly a work that no one could believe would have any success whatsoever but which against all odds became the hugest dramaturgical success of the period and a theatrical monument that has been remembered ever since and which still stands as thus: Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac" the unlikely play about romantic heroes fairy-tale like maidens medieval-inspired sword-fights about poetry love and art. The play had been taken on already in 1897 when the manuscript was finished but the directors of the theatre regretted their decision immediately not least due to the public reaction to the "outdated" romantic comedy-drama which nobody would want to go see and thus they severely cut the budget so that Rostand had to pay for all the costumes himself. Even the actor playing the main part a leading actor at the time regretted having taken the part and Rostand is reported to have apologized to him for involving him in this "disastrous adventure". "Therefore when the curtain rose on "Cyrano de Bergerac" for the first time on December 28 1897 expectations were low. The audience however was about to be pleasantly surprised. From the hero's last first majestic entrance to his last farewell he transfixed his viewers. Theatergoers cheered Cyrano's triumphs sighed at his suffering laughed at his witty wordplay and cried as his fate became known. A full hour after the curtain fell the audience was still applauding thunderously. It is not easy to explain why Rostand's play confounded everyone by becoming one of the century's greatest smash hits. Perhaps the answer lies in "Cyrano de Bergerac's" stark contrast to the grimly realistic plays of its day which often focused on modern society's darkest problems. The figure of the swashbuckling Cyrano dueling his way across the stage and stunning his compatriots with his verbal cleverness took Paris by storm. In fact many critics both of Rostand's time and later attributed the play's tremendous success to its romanticism or emphasis on idealism and heroism." Glencoe Literature Library Study Guide for Cyrano de Bergerac. The work immediately became a huge success and within a very short amount of time it had been translated into almost all European languages and was performed at theatres throughout Europe.Eugen Zabel was a famous literary critic and author who at the time of "Cyrano de Bergerac" was editor of the "Nationalzeitung". He was born in Königsberg in 1851 and died in Berlin in 1925. In his youth he wrote poems and after his move to Berlin he worked as a journalist critic and writer. He did a lot of work on Russian themes both political historical topographical and literary and he became closely connected to the country. He was highly respected for his liiterary criticism and his opinions though often controversial played an important role in public opiniation. hardcover

Front pastedown with morocco bookplate of Robert Hoe. Lower corners a bit bumped tail edge of lower board with shallow one-inch dent occasional paper flaws or discoloration to edges of leaves but an excellent copy the interior clean and fresh and the binding lustrous.

This is a luxurious illustrated edition of Rostand's classic work offered in a sumptuous binding done by the Club Bindery for its co-founder and manager Robert Hoe. Rostand's influential and enduringly popular 1897 verse play in five acts--sometimes referred to colloquially as the "Romance of the Nose"--is loosely based upon the real-life story of the French author and duelist Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-55 who was famous for having a prodigious proboscis. A theatrical triumph from its opening night the play focuses on the eloquent Cyrano's unrequited love for the comely Roxanne whom he must court as secret proxy for a friend of handsome visage but wooden tongue. Rostand 1868-1918 wrote a number of successful plays often like "Cyrano" based on figures from French history. The present beautiful large-format copy was originally owned by Robert Hoe a founder of the Grolier Club and one of the world's great book collectors. After Grolier was established in 1884 it soon became apparent that the country's few established hand binders were overtaxed in providing repairs and rebinding for the club members' rapidly accumulating acquisitions. As a consequence in 1895 Grolier members along with Edwin Holden and other wealthy collectors established the Club Bindery in order to attract European craftsmen to provide close to home fine quality binding work rivalling what was available abroad. The Club Bindery was in operation until 1909 with Hoe being its manager and most important client. It provided bindings that tended to be traditional in style--though frequently with elaborate decoration--and that lived up to its patrons' expectations in terms of excellence. The first members of the staff of the Club Bindery were the Englishmen R. W. Smith and Frank Mansell. They were subsequently joined by a number of French binders chief among them being Leon Maillard who had worked previously for Cuzin Gruel and Marius-Michel and whose precise and intricate finishing is impressively demonstrated on our binding here. It is said by Beverly Chew that Hoe 1839-1911 had a collection that was "the finest America has ever contained." He acquired illuminated manuscripts early printing he owned a Gutenberg Bible on paper and one on vellum fine bindings French and English literature and Americana and when his library was sold in 1911-12 it fetched nearly $2 million a record that held until the Streeter sale more than 50 years later. The present volume represents the fine level of aesthetic achievement typical of the bindery and it is especially impressive because of its significant dimensions. Armand Magnier unknown

A beautifully-bound first edition of the classic French play about the large-nosed Cyrano obliged to help another more handsome man woo the beautiful Roxanne who Cyrano already loves. Rostand's play stages the tragic complicity between two halves of man puts into question the existence of justice or happy love in this world but ends with the evidence of hope: in the guise of Christian it is the soul of Cyrano that Roxanne loved. This drama in five acts saw its first production on December 27th 1897 with the leading role played by Constant Coquelin who went on to play the role 410 times and toured the play in North America. The dedication of this book reads " C'est à l'âme de CYRANO que je voulais dédier ce poème. Mais puisqu'elle a passé en vous COQUELIN c'est à cous que le dédie. E. R." I wanted to dedicate this poem to the soul of CYRANO. Since that soul has passed through you COQUELIN I dedicated to you. E.R. Rostand was elected to the prestigious Académie Française the following year making him the youngest member to date at age 31.
Cyrano has been performed all over the world and has seen many cinematic adaptations including the 1950 production starring Jose Ferrer winner of the 1950 Oscar for the Best Actor.

The binder's mark indicates that this copy prepared in London specifically for the library of L.
