The first four volumes of Samuel Richardson's epistolary novel are bound into two leather bound books. Published in French. First published in 1753 the novel was a response to Henry Fielding's The History of Tom Jones which parodied the morals presented in Richardson's previous novels. After rejecting the advances of Sir Hargrave Pollexfen Harriet Byron is kidnapped by the him until Sir Charles Grandison comes to her rescue. Grandison then becomes the central figure and focuses on his life and history. Prior owner's bookplate to both volumes. No author given. In a full mottled calf binding. Externally generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards a little more so to the joints and the spine. Volume II is missing a tiny bit of calf to the head of the spine. The front and rear hinges of volume I are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the occasional spot to the front and rear of the volume. Richardsons Roman wird literaturgeschichtlich als englische Prosa der Empfindsamkeit eingeordnet. Die Dresdner Ausgabe ist in französischer Sprache erschienen. Vom Englischen ins Französische übersetzt wurde sie von Antoine-François Prévost dem später durch sein Werk "Manon Lescaut" berühmt gewordenen französischen Schriftsteller. Angesichts nur kleiner Auflage für gehobene Kreise 270 Jahren seit Erscheinen und den Zerstörungen im 2. A mesure qu’il poussait son travail, il en résulta Paméla ou la Vertu récompensée (Londres, 1740). Le succès énorme de cet ouvrage fit instantanément de Richardson un des écrivains les plus connus et admirés de son époque. Il a influencé des écrivains tels que Jane Austen, Goethe, Jean-Jacques Rousseau ou Choderlos de Laclos.
