John Richardson (1667-1753) was an English Quaker minister who preached extensively in England, and then set out for America as an evangelist, arriving in Maryland in 1701 after a 16-week crossing. He spent more than two years there, ceaselessly touring and disputing with Quakers and non-Quakers, on one occasion accompanying William Penn to treat with some American Indians, who made a favourable impression on him. This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition 'Picasso's Women: Fernande to Jacqueline a Tribute to John Richardson' at the Gagosian Gallery in New York from May 3 to June 29, 2019. John Richardson (1924- 2019) an art historian and intimate friend of Picasso and his wives and children, had recently passed away in March of 2019. The exhibition explored one of Richardson's favorite themes: how Picasso's portraits of his women, wives, mistresses and friends, illuminated his art and his creative process in general. Foreword by Larry Gagosian. Well known texts by John Richardson are reproduced here. Illustrated in color with many reproductions of Picasso's paintings and sculptures of women, and vintage photographs of these women: Fernande Olivier, Olga Kohkhlova Picasso, Sara Murphy, Marie-Therese Walter, Dora Maar, Francoise Gilot, Sylvette David and Jacqueline Roque Picasso.
