A beautiful ephemeral and very rare angling print on linen.<br/> <br/>At the centre of the print is a Hogarthian scene of an angler in his winter closed-season sitting-room. He is laid-up in his arm-chair with gout his foot rests on a gout stool a toddy warms on the grate above a blazing fire whilst he tries to re-live the long-gone halcyon days of summer by fishing for apples in a large coopered barrel full of water. Scattered around him are the accoutrements of his art: creels nets rods an open fly-case. This image is surrounded by a decorative border of scrolling stylised foliage. Beyond this is a surround of 13 ovals each with a picture of a different British freshwater fish giving the fish's name and the season when it can be fished joined to these ovals are shaped 'labels' that give brief details of where and when each fish is to be found what time of day it should be fished for and which hooks and flies/bait should be used. The outermost rectangular border includes the title an oval portrait of Sir Izaak Walton at each corner and a series of shaped boxes containing details of flies and baits under the headings 'Flies' 'Pastes' 'Worms' and 'Fishes and Insects'. Sir Izaak Walton 1595-1683 was the author of the most famous book on fishing and a classic of English literature: The Compleat Angler ; or the Contemplative Man's Recreation. It was written during the horrific English Civil War and was Walton's attempt to draw attention to the benevolence of a simple virtuous life. unknown books

Small 4to24.5 x 17.2 cm. Contemporayry green morocco binding. Collation: 119 lv each leaf mounted on stub with single labeled specimen. Each specimen is identified with earlier Latin name in black ink and later additions in red ink. All specimens are well preserved and beautifully displayed on the page. Binding has raised bands; title in gilt in upper panel. There is sunning on the spine and along the hinges and edges of boards less so for the later. Minor wear to ends of spine. Monogram "SB" in calligraphic style in gilt in each corner of boards. The inner covers are elaborately detailed in gilt dentils and additional inner borders. Pastedowns and free end papers in fine marble paper. This private collection is the most elaborate that we have had and represents a personal collection of "SB" who has made the presentation of the algae growing along the coast of Britany most appealing and scientifically important. <br/><br/> unknown books

The box contains parts for this hand-colored lithograph game with standing cut-outs that are either folded or on wooden bases. The collection of parts include six trees four with green benches two rose bushes a pair of classical brick archways a woman filling a watering can at a fountain a herbaceous border a low border of shrubs a set of four shelves with 15 slots each total ot 60 for potted plants and fifty-six of 60 potted plants plus a separate wooden base with a slot in either side occasional minor creasing and some old repairs on verso of parts. From the image on the cover and contents of the box there might be some additional parts missing other than the 4 potted plants. The missing parts appear to be the children and parents. However the colored lithograph is not exact replica of all the parts within the box. This is a rare Garden garden game that can be used by children and adults from the Collection of Percy H. Remarkably similar to a picture by John William Hill entitled "Circular Mill King Street New York 1823" another unusually-shaped mill also in brown ink and green watercolor which was done when Hill was twenty one and derivative of the watercolor painting he probably learned from British trained artists including his father John Hill and William G. This fine Biblical scene is from the Book of Ruth chapter 2 in which Boaz owner of the fields being worked tells Ruth that she is welcome to glean there gather what has been left behind and that she will be safe. Ruth kneels to the ground: "Then she fell on her face and bowed herself to the ground and said unto him 'Why have I found grace in they eyes that thou shouldst take knowledge of me seeing I am a stranger" verse 3. Boaz answers in effect that it is because he knows she is an orphan and a stranger that he welcomes her. unknown books

19000000268Germany 1900. 4to 23.0 x 30.9 cm. Original quarter black pebble cloth and green paperboards in very good condition. Collation: 30 stiff gray paper leaves sewn to backing. Each leave has12 red ink rectangles in three horizontal rows on each side. The upper portion of each seed packet is glued to the gray paper within an individual red ink margin. Each packet has a printed number at the top and complete taxonomic name beneath the flower image. There are 651 seed packets in alphabetical order glued to both sides of each of 27 leaves and the first row of the 28th leaf. The remaining leaves have culture information for each of 292 plants representative of those illustrated on the seed packets. The culture information for each genus is printed on small squares of paper glued in alphabetical order to the stiff gray paper. Each packet has chromolithograph image on each side. The front has the flower and the back has an image of the entire plant. All packets are in very good condition. <br/><br/>Collection of seed packets with chromolithograph images of plants and flowers. This is an exceptional and scarce collection of early printed seed packets collected in a single volume. It is likely that a traveling salesman in Germany would present such an album to nurseries to illustrate the available seeds for ordering. Most of the plants are annuals or biennials. This album is in very good condition and probably not used in the field. This suggests that it may have been for reference in a seed company's office. hardcover books
18737300Madrid: La Viuda de Calero 1873. First edition. Two volumes quarto 22 x 16cm pp iii 548; ii 572. Palau 260053 Written by those who accompanied him Fr. Antonio de Ciudad Real and Fr. Alonso de San Roman. Fray Alonso Ponce arrived in New Spain in 1584 with the title of Commissary General for the Franciscan Order in New Spain. From then until 1589 he traveled through the various Franciscan provinces from Guadalajara to Nicaragua visiting friars and correcting abuses. His travels were generally on foot and involved many trials including clashes with the Viceroy and eventual exile from the kingdom. The two friars who accompanied him as his secretaries noted down the incidents of his travels and observations about the various regions -- their flora and fauna the roads and travelling conditions etc. -- and the peoples that lived in them doing this with great detail; their reports were apparently written as they travelled along which gives them a particular note of veracity as well as interest -- eyewitness testimonials. It is generally accepted that the two secretaries were Alonso de San Roman and Antonio de Ciudad Real. This latter returned to New Spain and became the greatest Mayan linguist of his day. See Beristain under Ciudad Real. The work is filled with first hand reports of life in New Spain at the end of the 16th century including both historical and ethnological information.The Porrua Diccionario Historia etc. says of it: "Hay informaciones de primera vista que ayudan a reconstruir la vida de aquellos tiempos y son de grata lectura." The introduction states: " Es un verdadero itinerario descriptivo de mas de dos mil leguas importantisimo a nuestro parecer; pues en el con gran sencillez y sin pretenciones de ningun genero se describen las costumbres traje y lengua de sus habitantes se marca la distancia de unos pueblos o conventos a otros. y se dan curiosas noticias de algunas de las antiquedades de aquellas comarcas asi como sus diferentes climas y cosechas." The narrative of Ponce's journey was first published in Madrid in 1873 from a manuscript of it in the possession of Mariano de Zabalburu. Two indices were later published for it -- an indication of the book's value: Sabin 63965 also refers to it as a 'valuable work." This copy is from the library of George McClelland Foster Jr who served as a professor of anthropology from 1953 to his retirement in 1979: the quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. A note-card from the executor of Foster's library has been laid in and his stamp is on title: there are some occasional pencil marginalia. Bound in full Spanish tree-calf with gilt lettering to red and black spine labels. No copies at auction are recorded -- exceedingly rare in the market. INSCRIBED by the author unknown to an Ellen Pitman and dated in the year of publication. With 55 original mounted photographs many quite good albeit discolored along the edges. The typeface throughout is particularly lovely and a good sample of font from this period. Comical woodcuts at the end of each chapter. A revised edition was also published in 1817. Fisk first notes this in 1824 as a reprint of the London 1806 edition and notes that it was reprinted in England in 1809 1813 1819 and at other times. The name of the compiler has never been made public. Sixty eight pages or loose sheets from physicians or pharmacists of prescriptions to treat various ailments and sickness are bound in this small volume. There are many additional pages all blank. This is an interesting collection of recipies as the originator of many is noted or signed at the end of the prescribed treatment. Included is a rare printed prescription form from John Martin Bigelow M.D. who was both physician and botanist. The recipe is written out in ink. Bigelow made significant contributions to the Mexican Boundary Survey as collector and classifier. He and C. C. Parry were the major collectors of plants. On a second exploration for the Railroad series Bigelow found the Parthenium argentatum a rubber-yielding plant commonly known by its Mexican name 'guayule.' <br/><br/> hardcover books

Plate mark is faint. Image size: 14 3/4 x 19 5/8 inches. A commanding view of Ludlow Castle in Shropshire.<br/> <br/>After the Norman invasion a string of castles was planned along the English/Welsh border to guard against the unconquered Welsh and Ludlow held one of the strongest defensive positions. The castle was built by Walter de Lacy in the late 11th century and his family retained the lordship until the end of the 13th century. It then passed through various hands until it was taken over by the Mortimer family. In 1425 it was passed to Richard Plantagenet the leader of the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses but it was taken and sacked by the Lancastrians in 1459. In 1461 when Richard's son became Edward IV the castle became Crown property and remained so for 350 years. Edward and Richard the two princes in the Tower spent most of their childhood at Ludlow and Edward was there when he heard of his father's death and his accession to the throne as Edward V. They went to London for his coronation but were imprisoned in the Tower and shortly afterwards murdered. Henry VII's eldest son Prince Arthur and his wife Catherine of Aragon were staying at Ludlow when he died in 1502 and his heart is buried there. His death led his younger brother to become Henry VIII on their father's death and to marry Arthur's widow who became the first of Henry's six wives. The buildings fell into disrepair during the 18th century but were restored by the Earl of Powis in 1771. Published by J. Deeley, No. 95 Berwick Street unknown books

The action takes place in Rubeland Saxony-Anhalt. Other performers include Flanko Wolf Fritzus and his wife Perdestalla Liebling and Maloss.
