This Investiture Proclaimed in Grace Cathedral at the Autumnal Equinox 1971." Published by the Hermes Free Press an offshoot of the Zephyrus Press of San Francisco. Noted on page 175 of Alistair Johnston's "Zephyrus Image: A Bibliography" who notes "10 1/4 x 14 3/4" 12 page book sewn into brown Tweedweave cover "printed on Bergstrom papers at Hermes Free Press in San Francisco Spring 1972" Centaur type in brown on cover. This book assigns specific endangered plants and animals to each U.S. Senator. Originally in printed manila envelope lacking with this copy. One copy was mailed to each U.S. Senator. Rob Rusk writes . The Totem Protectorates appeared in another issue of Place magazine half on the inside front cover and half on the inside back cover - the Neon Rose issue - tho I'm unsure whether it was photocopied or reset". Interestingly neither the Morgan bibliography of Ginsberg or the McNeil bibliography of Snyder makes mention of this independent piece. Only four copies located in O.C.L.C. Although the print run is unstated according again to Johnston the typical Zephyrus Image publications were generally produced in small quantities perhaps 100 to 200 copies. Scarce item. Original silver gelatin photographic postcard of the Empress sitting on a padded bench in her garden holding an umbrella and a bouquet of flowers; 5 x 3 1/4; minor wear to corners and image; a bit of age-toning and a manuscript note in pencil to verso; near fine condition. Signed in ink: "Maria Hvidore" in the lower half of the photo. Possibly one of Maria Feodorovna's last photographs the anonymous note on the back stated: "The Empress sent me this not long before she passed away at Hvidore." Empress Consort of Russia Maria Feodorovna 1847 â 1928 christened Dagmar was the wife of Tsar Alexander III and mother of Emperor Nicholas II of Russia whom she outlived by ten years. The second daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Cassel she was bethroted to Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich of Russia but after his death from meningitis in 1865 Maria honored his last wish and married his younger brother the future Alexander III. She converted to Orthodoxy and became Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna of Russia. With Alexander II's assassination in 1881 she and her husband were crowned Emperor and Empress of Russia. After Alexander III's death in 1894 she became Dowager Empress and her son Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra were crowned the new rulers. The outbreak of the Revolution in 1917 forced her to travel to Crimea where she received the devastating news that her sons daughter-in-law and grandchildren had been murdered. She refused to believe it and declared it a rumor. Although the monarchy would be overthrown she would not leave Russia until 1919 - first to London and eventually to her native Denmark where she would settle in Hvidore a former country house near Copenhagen. Maria died on October 13 1928 at the age of 80 having outlived four of her six children. Hvidore: s. n. paperback books

Spine appears persished. But otherwise sound and apparently complete. Very good. Housed in custom Talas archival clamshell box. <br/><br/>An extraordinary and unique handmade artist's book elaborately assembled by an anonymous artist. A kinky but lighthearted celebration of female flagellantism the book appropriates quintessentially 1960s fashion models and recontextualizes them in dozens of original collages so that they are weilding whips switches and various similar tools. Paired with self-referential and irreverant texts as well as black-and-white hand-penned drawings presumably by the assembler of bondage spankings and other S&M-themed scenes the book humorously imagines Mod Girls as doms — a perhaps intentional visual pun. The collages many spanning across page spreads and including one fold-out exhibit a strikingly skillful and stylish retraint suggesting an ambition and audience beyond the merely pruriently personal. An outsider book of rare sophistication and wit: the Swinging Sixties meets Dada. Yeah baby. hardcover books

With eight plates including title page plus painted vignette on final leaf. These vignette watercolors four to eight per page depict the diversity of British experience whether its variety of industry its trades its modes of farming its ships etc. The effect is panoramic and epic a visual equivalent to Noel Coward's sweep in "Cavalcade" say. Framing it all are Art Nouveau devices and ornament very much true to the period. The book was easily of publishable quality and its creation demonstrates that a strain of patriotism and optimism somehow withstood the bitterness and cynicism engendered by the war. The table of contents gives titles for each work but no author's name; the bookplate with initials "A. J." offer the only clue to the item's creator or owner. <br /> <br />The material veers in tone from the parodic to the surreal to the philosophically melancholic; the style incorporates a recondite vocabulary "the pyral tarantism of being in the world" and a single consistent insistent voice alternating long unpunctuated Joycean streams of frantic consciousness with brief and airless sentence fragments. A perpetual undercurrent of violent sexuality surfaces as much in the settings and scenery as in the events: a car crash; a game of human chess; a blazing furnace; a slaughterhouse. <br /> <br />The authorial narration steps out of its queasy dreamtime now and then to comment on itself "It would appear that this is the whim of the authors ince reason is no part of the relation" or to focus on a concrete and precisely dated image: "Week-end Traffic" catalogs automobile makes and models in obsessive parodic almost Ballardian detail -- a 1931 Alfa-Romeo; a '28 Lombard a Triumph Scorpion -- and characters offer each other Passing Cloud cigarettes. But for the most part settings are as hard to place as the book itself. Character names are almost but not quite real: Nish Rogoze Valetta Fedor Shad. <br /> <br />Illustrated with line drawings in brown pen presumably also by the writer with occasional accents in black and brief captions taken from the scenes they illustrate. The execution is skilled but careful often quoting other artwork as in the illustration to the final story "Communication" whose subject is the Breughel painting Dulle Griet; we see a copy of Brueghel's scene through the latticework of a window. Other illustrations appear to be carefully composed from copies or multiple tracings giving something of the effect of a Max Ernst collage -- particularly the images of a horse-headed woman and a lion-headed man perhaps an intentional quotation from Une Semaine de Bonte. A Piranesi-esque interior gives way to a crowned woman in 20th century corset and garter belt: the Queen. <br /> <br />Although a precise date cannot be given this book bears the stamp of a London bindery which operated as Bailey Bros. until a name-change in the 1970s and references in the text place its composition after the 1930s; we estimate the date of production to be circa the late 1960s to early 1970s - though its private library feel perhaps hints at a possible earlier creation. <br /> <br />Bizarre and unsettling yet also the product of an original voice. An astonishingly well-preserved pressed Alpine floral album assembled from plants collected on a motor journey in the summer of 1910 that starts in Gibraltar then Naples and spends most time in and around St Moritz and Mt Muraigl. The collector is anonymous but we might assume she he was American as a postcard laid-in is addressed to New Hampshire. We can assume the album with the titles FLORA ALPINA: GENEROSO KULM on its cover was purchased at the Hotel Generosa one of several in the region where the flowers were collected which catered to motoring tourists of the period. Oblong approx 13" x 9" cobalt blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration front cover floral patterned endpapers in red and gold 20 leaves pages. A total of 27 specimens each most delicately arranged so as to display optimally stalk leaf and flower each with a daintily handwritten description identifying type of flower or species place and date of collection most August 1910 sometimes with the most charming notations which we have highlighted in bold in the page-by-page listing below . There is virtually no deterioration of specimens each conveying still the texture and weight of each plant. Laid-in is a un-stamped postcard in German of Pontresina from which the album has a specimen which pictures a number of hotels on the mountain slopes addressed to New Hampshire USA. 191025010Prague: Druk H. Mercy 1910. 8vo107 pp stab-stapled and glue bound into violet printed wraps. Front and back panels of wraps detached but present with the paper covering the spine mostly perished. Marginal annotations in pencil throughout. The second edition of this privately published and circulated utopian proposal to create an organized intelligentsia and foster human creativity against capitalism. Published around Whitsun in Prague it includes reactions from readers who had received the first version of the text. A third publicly published edition would follow later this same year. The work was written by Viktor Hueber a former Austrian captain who became a member of the circle which published the short-lived magazine Der Anfang in which Benjamin published his first poems and essays. Hueber was later associated with Franz Pfemfert's better known periodical Die Aktion and early issues of the magazine bore the subtitle "Publikationsorgan der Organization der Intelligenz" a reference to this work though subsequent efforts to create an actual organization based on the book's principles failed due to infighting Portner p. 140. Benjamin discusses the book in a September 15 1913 letter to Carla Seligsohn the first person he'd met who had also read the book. "Those of us who understand Hueber feel our youth complete only in the presence of his ideas- the others who feel noth- ing are not young. They have simply never been young. They took pleasure in their youth only when it was over just a memory. They did not know the great joy of its presence which we are now feeling and which I sense in your words . But in every individual who is born no matter where and turns out to be young there is not 'improvement' but perfection from the very start. This is the goal that Heuber so messianically feels is near . " McCole analyzing this same letter notes that this appears to be Benjamin's first use of the term "Messianic" in his writings McCole p. 61. The idea would haunt Benjamin's subsequent works on history and reach its conclusion in the second thesis in On the Concept of History written just before his march into the mountains. "The past carries with it a secret index by which it is referred to its resurrection. There is an agreement and an appointment between us and the generations of the past. For we have been expected upon this earth. Like the generations before us we have been given a weak messianic power which the past can lay claim to. This claim is not to be settled lightly. This account appears to have been a draft and may have been intended for publication there are numerous corrections changes and emendations throughout the work. The unidentified author traveled by rail from Yellowstone to Seattle and from there to Alaska by steamer. The author visited Ketchikan Seward Anchorage Fairbanks where time was spent with the Mayor Valdez Juneau Prince William Sound Cordova Columbia Glacier etc. The author comments upon the events of the trip and gives interesting information on accommodations for tourists describes the scenery and topography a twelve page description of Columbia Glacier and also describes the towns and cities visited. "Valdez represents the tragedy of mining towns. It is really a dead mining town & it is a real tragedy to walk through and see the great number of vacant houses. Really it is hard to understand the lure of such a place." "Anchorage was created as an operating base for the construction of the railroad and has large permanent railroad yards & shops. It is the youngest and most up to date town in Alaska. For the tourist however it has little of interest." "Fairbanks a town almost exclusively of log cabins. the city is isolated because of its great distance from anywhere and people of the States do not care to spend so much time in traveling to reach the place." <br /> books

A first-person narrative ostensibly by an anonymous young woman recounting her ambitions and achievements following the loss of one leg in early childhood and the consequent physical and social restrictions imposed on her. Presented as nonfiction and received as such by contemporary reviewers with the publisher responding to one enthusiastic contemporary reader: "Our contract with the author especially provides that we are not to reveal the identity and we cannot give the names of any other books by this author without violating our agreement." "Travel" Jan. 1913. <br /> <br />Another memoirist however in her own account of life with a similar disability wrote: "The book proved to be the bastard brain child of a big and bouncing and very jolly New York businessman and writer. He does use crutches having a pair of unreliable knees . but he is definitely not a fascinating little feminine hopper. Although he admits openly to a new legitimate book every year or so he never confesses his paternity to THE GIRL WITH THE ROSEWOOD CRUTCHES that poor love child of his careless youth." "Out on a Limb" Louise Baker 1946. <br /> <br />Despite the book's sentimentality and inspirational appeal its treatment of disability is engagingly modern and matter-of-fact in many respects: as the heroine's need for crutches is both permanent and nonprogressive she evades the common literary fates of miraculous recovery or tragic death and holds eternal grudges against well-meaning men who call her a "cripple" to her face. Fighting to make her way in New York 'Kate' endures an interview with a newspaperman who thinks her only fit for desk work: "'I have used them crutches for fifteen years' I told him letting him know how clearly I read his prejudices. 'They are no handicap to me. For the life of me I cannot see how they would affect my ability to work upon a newspaper.'" The festival attracted over 20 000 people from 138 countries. Les Quinze Joyes de Mariage The 15 Joys of Marriage is an anonymous late fourteenth- or early fifteenth-century French satire in prose that presents a picture full of sharpness and humor on the deceits and conflicts that afflict the married state. The misogynist satire is allied to a pitiless analysis of the blindness of husbands in everyday concrete situations. The author remains anonymous in spite of the eight lines of octosyllables placed at the end of the text that contain the name of the author. The riddle has held its secret until today but several names have been proposed most often Antoine de la Sale 1385-1460. Henry Lemarie 1911-1991 a French illustrator from Tours is the most famous French miniaturist of the twentieth century; his work is highly sought after by bibliophiles. Lemarie studied classical literature under the Jesuits then from 1930 to 1936 studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Two weird erotic Indian illuminations the likes of which we have never before encountered and are unlikely to encounter again. <br/><br/>Popular in Roman decorative art the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe the text but there is writing on the verso. <br/><br/>The second illumination depicts a grotesque she-devil with fangs horns and a long tongue naked save for pearls around her wrists ankles and biceps. Above her waist her speckled skin is light purple and below dark green. The monster clutches to a strange tree on which four priapus grow and with it engages in sexual relations. She reaches toward a basket of several other priapus which are positioned on an upper branch. As with the accompanying illumination in the foreground we find a watery pool and pink flowers and dark green hills studded by surreal trees. Old folds paperclip stains in the margins the paper is well-thumbed with small tears and creases but is overall supple and very good. Complex literate and detailed sex story about a man who meets a beautiful foreign woman in a park in an American city and is brought back to a luxurious abode where to his surprise he is called upon to pleasure the woman's lovely friend repeatedly and in a variety of ways. He later wakes up in the park and thinks he has dreamed the encounter but discovers a gold watch has been left in his pocket as a gift. The following day the events are repeated but this time with his friend and the beautiful foreign woman joining in. Spoiler Alert!: when they are thrown over after the dalliance the men learn that the young woman was the princess of a European country soon to be a queen and that she was visiting America for a last fling in anticipation of her upcoming wedding to the crown prince of another nation and that her companion was a countess who traveled everywhere with her as a chaperone.<br/><br/>Porn of this sort was made exponentially more common when American servicemen gained wide access to mimeograph machines during WWII but this is a typed manuscript and our best guess is that it predates the War. Little from the text indicates the possible age of the manuscript. An OCLC and broad internet search locates no copies although admittedly OCLC is an insufficient source for tracking this sort of material. Possibly unique. unknown books

Small broadside; 8 1/4 x 5 1/4; salmon-colored sheet printed in black; fragile with several closed cuts and punctures to lower margin; a few crease lines; very good- condition. A scarce survivor of cinema ephemera the broadside presented the Russian movies to be screened on June 25 1937 at the Paris World Fair known as the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris. As advertised the films were all original with French subtitles and included "Vers le Pole Nord" "20me Fete du Travail en U. R. S. S" and "Le Depute de la Baltique" Baltic Deputy - the Russian drama an early forerunner of Soviet historic realism which encapsulated the 1917 Revolution through the eyes of botanist and physiologist Kliment Timiriazev.
