Slight wear on spine. Otherwise a very good copy. Cr. 8vo. 20 x 15 cm. In Ottoman script Old Turkish with Arabic letters. 143 p. Extremely rare first Turkish edition of the legend of Hatem of Tai tribe or "the tale of Hatemtai or qissa-e Hatem-Tai" which was very popular in the Indian subcontinent as well as the earliest printed separate form from the Arabian nights Alf laila wa laila in the Middle East. In Turkish literature this story was printed nine times separately from the Arabian nights 1840 1856 1867 1871 1874 1879 1885 1891 1925. This is the very first edition of this book. Hatim al-Tai âtim bin Abd Allâh bin Sa'ad a't-Tâ'iyy; Hatim of the Tayy tribe; deceased 578 was the ruling prince and poet of the Tayy tribe of Arabia. Stories about his extreme generosity have made him an icon among Arabs up until today as evident in the proverbial phrase "more generous than Hatim". His son was Adi ibn Hatim who was a companion of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Al-Tai lived in Ha'il in present-day Saudi Arabia and was mentioned in some Hadiths by Muhammad. He died in 578 AD and was buried in Tuwarin Ha'il. His tomb is described in the Arabian Nights. He lived in the sixth century CE and was also mentioned in the Arabian Nights stories. The celebrated Persian poet Saadi in his work Gulistan 1259 CE wrote: "Hatim Tai no longer exists but his exalted name will remain famous for virtue to eternity. Distribute the tithe of your wealth in alms; for when the husbandman lops off the exuberant branches from the vine it produces an increase of grapes". He is also mentioned in Saadi's Bostan 1257. According to legends in various books and stories he was a famous personality in the region of Ta'i present-day Ha'il and is also a well-known figure in the rest of the Middle East as well as the Indian subcontinent featuring in many books films and TV series in Arabic Persian Urdu Turkish Hindi and various other languages. The books on the story usually consist of a short introduction describing his ancestry and character and tell the seven episodes based on seven riddles asked by a beautiful and rich woman named Husn Banu who will marry only the person who is able to obtain answers to all seven of them. A king who falls in love with her but is unable to find answers tells the generous Hatemtai whom he meets by chance all about it. Hatim undertakes the quest to find the answers and help the king marry her. In every copy we've seen plate no. 5 often described as bound out of sequence is placed between plates nos. 7 and 8 and according to the text that is where it belongs. Later full tan calf covers framed with French fillet and gilt sunburst ornament to corners richly gilt spine in six compartments divided by raised bands red morocco lettering piece gilt gilt turn-ins top edge gilt others untrimmed. From the collection of bibliophile Brent Gration-Maxfield with his characteristic manuscript ex-libris and tidy bibliographic notes "collated perfect" "only blemish is a slight mark on the half title". Gration-Maxfield library was dispersed in a series of sales by Sotheby's in the early 1980s. An excellent wide-margined hand-colored example mild offsetting from plates a few stray spots else contents clean bright and handsomely bound. Very scarce in commerce and uncommon in institutional collections with OCLC listing only 10 holdings worlwide. Not in Hardie Abbey or Tooley and only J. Clark but not this title mentioned in Prideaux. This anonymous volume of humorous poetry collects 22 works satirizing English eccentrics among them the "bounce" a bullying braggart the country physician the slave to fashion the scholar of dead languages and old maids and young lovers. The engraver John Heaviside Clark was a Scottish painter of seascapes and landscapes active in the first third of the nineteenth century. N. B. Savage was executed twice the first attempt to kill him being unsuccessful thus shocking everyone when he suddenly started breathing once more. In a full rebacked calf binding. The first planisphere is thought to have been made in 1624 by German astronomer Jacob Bartsch. The days and months of the year are marked on the outer portion of the work with the constellations visible at a particular date and time visible through the elliptical plastic aperture in the overlay.Moving portions are in full working order.A small hole to the head of the work appears to indicate that this planisphere was intended to be used as a decorative wall hanging. In the publisher's original binding with two paper covered boards connected by a metal stud and thus revolving and with a plastic aperture to the front board. Spotting to front board which is lightly age toned. Small 1" closed tear to the plastic. Moving parts in full working order. Light handling marks to head and tail of rear board. a87745Single volume. Sm.4to. 287p. no blanks marbled boards with leather spine. Entirely manuscript. Title of first page: "Diary Commencing Sunday Oct 3 1869 at Colombo Ceylon". Diary ends April 13 1873. First 38 pages are very interesting as the diarist describes in fine detail- with frequent touches of dry humor - his adventures as he travels on the Simla Steamship from Colombo through the Suez Canal back to London. He mentions that he has taken this trip before. The rest of the diary is written in England apparently in Southampton and most all entries follow a pattern of first describing the day's weather and then listing ships going in or out their passengers and/or their cargo usually coal slate or peat. A few personal notes are given but not often. On his way up to the Suez Canal the Simla stops to pick up coal. Diarist writes: "Aden is very rocky with a dry scorched burnt appearance little or no soil & no vegetation.hot & the glare of the sun exceedingly effecting to the eye." He goes inland to a settlement where he finds "half a dozen of the Simla passengers surrounded by almost two dozen of native trading Jews particularly anxious to pass their wares ostrich eggs and feathers.the din and noise they made baffles description drowning our voices so that we could not hear each other speak.After a quarter of an hour spent in the noisy battling with our salesmen I became the purchaser of some ostrich feather white and gray." Later in trip the ship's Lieut. Col. Lacy "died suddenly after a few hours illness of heat apoplexy". The next day the ship's chaplain refuses to assist at the funeral services as he believed Lacy brought on his own death by drinking too much. Typical entries once back in London: "January 9 1872 . Light airs and colam. Reaper sailed at morn.light breeze from NE with rain second case of diptheria reported in Island at Windbreck. Dr. Logic came here on sunday ." "July 3 1872. Moderate light breeze.Boat off for first load of peats. Simson came in with cargo of slates." From the text is seem likely that the diarist worked either as the Dockmaster or employee of some sort at the Southhampton dock or as an employee of a shipping company located in that area. Some names mentioned in the diary: J. W. Heddle Capt. James Cromarty J. W. Laughton and his son John John Storach and Charles Henry Sparkes. Diarist does say his brother-in-law was Samuel L. Louttie who died unexpectedly on October 22 1869. Another interesting note is that diarist mentions that "The Bank" began July 15 1872. Neat and legible. Diary is in near VG condition with no spotting or tears but some light cover wear. Pictures available on request. . hardcover
