189071697Yokohama 1890. Fine. Yokohama 1890 12 x 18 cm autre Collection composed of 12 wet collodion photographs printed on albumen paper and hand-colored. The coloring of the photographs uses the traditional technique of distemper painting natural pigments mixed with glue applied with a brush. Photographers thus employed painters rather than the watercolorists used for prints. Album formed of two wooden boards covered with brown fabric showing visible fibers bound Japanese-style as an accordion. Each fold-out recto and verso presents 6 photographs: on the recto animated scenes views of landscapes and cities on the verso figures. This presentation is traditional for travel albums ""views and costume"" which the Japanese would later adopt. Each photograph: 8.7x13.2cm. The first 2 photographs have faded making the red pigments of the paint very visible as a result. For the second panel the first and 6th photographs have also faded likewise leaving the red pigments used very visible. The fifth has 2 scratched areas revealing the white of the paper. Foxing in the margins and on some photographs. The views represent famous sights along the Tokaido route the Meiji temple twice a busy street with lanterns a view of Mount Fuji with the famous wooden bridge. The earliest collections with Felice Beato showed only views of old Japan in black and white and representation and demand evolved. These Japanese views are very close in their staging and framing to the art of printmaking. One finds the Japanese taste already illustrated by prints for famous sites. Furthermore one sees almost no men in photographs from this period because the photographs were meant to represent contemporary Japan and men were now dressed in Western fashion; there were no more samurai. This is why women are represented in more than 70 percent of photographs from this period and in this collection one sees only one man a rickshaw puller. On this subject it was always geishas who were used for the photographs. All the studios thus had contracts with geisha houses whom they had pose for all scenes: musicians etc. The photographs of women: A woman with a fan 3 women holding hands 2 women in a carriage 3 women dancing the women of a geisha house. One must note that any attribution to a photographer is difficult due to the very history of photography in Japan because all the European studios and the first Japanese studios were bought by Japanese and the plates continued to be exploited under the name of the new photographer. Few albums and photographs bear a signature or studio mark. For example we know that Beato left professional photography in 1872. Baron von Stillfried left Japan definitively in 1881. The same year Kimbei Kusakabe 1841-1934 student of Beato and Stillfried opened his own studio in Yokohama. He would buy back part of his two masters' negatives four years later and regularly reprint them. hardcover

He made an important political contribution to the state of Nova Scotia before its entry into Confederation of Canada. He was the first international best-selling author of fiction from what is now Canada. In 1856 he emigrated to England where he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament. He was the father of the British civil servant Lord Haliburton and of the anthropologist Robert Grant Haliburton. On 17 December 1796 Thomas Chandler Haliburton was born in Windsor Nova Scotia to William Hersey Otis Haliburton a lawyer judge and political figure and Lucy Chandler Grant. His mother died when he was a small child. When Thomas was seven his father married Susanna Davis the daughter of Michael Francklin who had been Nova Scotia's Lieutenant Governor. He attended University of King's College in Windsor. Later he became a lawyer and opened a practice in Annapolis Royal the former capital of the colony. Haliburton attained distinction as a local businessman and as a judge but his greatest fame came from his published writings. He wrote a number of books on history politics and farm improvement. He first rose to international fame with his Clockmaker serial which first appeared in the Novascotian and was later published as a book throughout the British Empire as popular light reading. The work recounted the humorous adventures of the main character Sam Slick. In 1816 Haliburton married Lousia Nevill daughter of Captain Laurence Neville of the Eighth Light Dragoons. Between 1826 and 1829 Haliburton represented Annapolis County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Haliburton was eager to promote immigration to the colonies of British North America. One of his first written works was an emigrant's guide to Nova Scotia published in 1823 A General Description of Nova Scotia; Illustrated by a New and Correct Map. The community of Haliburton Nova Scotia was named after him. In Ontario Haliburton County is named after Haliburton in recognition of his work as the first chair of the Canadian Land and Emigration Company. In 1884 faculty and students at his alma mater founded a literary society in honour of the College's most celebrated man of letters. The Haliburton Society still active at the University of King's College Halifax is the longest-standing collegial literary society throughout the Commonwealth of Nations and North America. The mention "hurly on the long pond on the ice" which appears in the second volume of The Attaché or Sam Slick in England a work of fiction published in 1844 has been interpreted by some as a reference to an ice-hockey-like game he may have played during his years at King's College. It is the basis of Windsor's disputed claim to being the town that fathered hockey. In 1902 a memorial to Haliburton and his first wife was erected in Christ Church Windsor Nova Scotia by four of their children: Laura Cunard Lord Haliburton and two surviving sisters. Complete in eight volumes.Illustrated with a frontispiece to Volume I.The twenty-sixth edition.'Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy' is an eight volume collection of fictional letters claiming the authorship to be an Ottoman spy named 'Mahmut' in the French court of Louis XIV.The letters cover the period of 1637 to 1683 from the final years of the Regency of Anne of Austria to the long reign of Louis XIV. As a narrator Mahmut gossips about contemporary politics and the society of the court. These observations include looks at the Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin. This was a very popular work when first published admirers including Daniel Defoe who wrote his own 'Continuation of Turkish Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy in Paris' in 1718 which covered the period of 1687 to 1693. Volume I was written by Giovanni Paolo Marana a political refugee to the French court of Louis XIV. The subsequent seven volumes were first written in English and appeared between 1691 and 1694. There has been controversy regarding the authorship of the seven later volumes; the most notable of those attributed to the text are William Bradshaw and Robert Midgely who produced the original English translation.
