In consequence of a report that upon this occasion he would take final leave a numerous audience consisting besides medical students of the medical faculty many physicians and a number of gentlemen of the other professions were assembled to listen to the last words from the lips of the distinguished professor upon resigning the chair so honorably occupied by him for forty years. The address not being written but altogether oral cannot be given at length but we have obtained notes of some of the principal topics which so far as they extend can be considered accurate." "Warren was a tremendously accomplished clinician and academic part of a storied family dynasty of doctors who played a prominent role at the MGH and in medical science.29 His extensive personal papers preserved at the Countway Library of Medicine are available to researchers. His prominent role in the discovery of anesthesia has been widely and deservedly recognized both by the MGH and by historians. However the 2 public procedures that clearly demonstrated ether's ability to produce insensibility to pain during a serious surgical operation were performed not by Warren but by Hayward." Paul G. Wood engravings printed in black and red. First edition. <br /><br />Entertaining and moderately didactic verses for children handsomely produced in the McLoughlin style. Per the cataloging of the AAS copies this issue with "The Quiet Boy" on page 2 rather than page 4 and the illustrations printed in dull red rather than light red; the rear wrappers advertise paper dolls from McLoughlin including dolls for characters from Uncle Tom's Cabin that were not advertised until 1867. The paper dolls also include the little people performers Tom Thumb and Mrs. Tom Thumb as well as Minnie Warren and Commodore Nutt. <br /><br />A few stray early pencil marks. Detailed accounts of the various campaigns including Names of Officers killed wounded and missing. The one Preface appears in the final volume in which the author extends his apology for the difficulties in translating some French terms to English and the high cost the engravings to produce the maps which "very much advance the price of this volume." Overall very good. <br/><br/>A plea from unknown author offering statistics historical contect and warnings of the dangers of a half-way approach to temperance. Advocating for the kind legal ban of alcohol that would finally come to fruition during Prohibition the anonymous lecturer mixes a potent cocktail sorry had to of morality and patriotism: "Intemperance is the severest scourge with which our nation was ever visited. It has for many years rolled its waves of desolation over us spreading poverty ruin death and devestation around. Intemperance has filled our lands with widows and orphans. Under his black banner crime has stalked abroad at mid day and worked in darkness he has fed the hungry man of pestilence and nourished disease while they have done his deeds of cruelty . He hath filled our prisons and jails our poorhouses and penitentiaries with his unhappy visitors." Reference to Reuben Mussey Professor at Dartmouth College who left Dartmouth in 1838 and the "recent establishment of the Congressional Temperance Society" which was established in 1833 appear to date the manuscript to the mid 1830s; the paleography is consistent with this period as well. The lack of corrections suggests either fair copy or utilized in delivery. An apparently unpublished lecture bordering on sermon from the early years of the American temperance movement. unknown books
