In the original Japanese.A very scarce volume titled 一筆画譜 全 or 'Complete Single-Stroke Drawings' to the rear wrap.This beautifully illustrated work presents forty pages of illustrations monochrome many featuring sketched captions in Japanese characters.Among these illustrations are depictions of the superhuman-child folk hero Kintaro riding upon a giant fish a soba kiosk birds samurai abstract patterns and buildings.They style appears to be reminiscent of Hiroshige's wood-block prints.A very scarce volume of Japanese ink illustration in the single stroke style of the Edo period. In the original paper wraps with title label to rear wrap. Light edgewear to wrap perimeters otherwise externally smart. Small folds to endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Good.<br /> <br /> An interesting treatise on Puseyism penned anonymously by the second bishop in the Episcopal Church for the Diocese of New Jersey.<br /> <br /> "Puseyism" refers to a theological movement within the Church of England specifically associated with the teachings of Edward Pusey advocating for a return to high church practices and rituals. This was seen as having a lean towards Catholicism. "No Popery" is a historical anti-Catholic slogan expressing strong opposition to the influence of the Catholic Church and was often used to criticize practices considered too Catholic-like.<br /> <br /> George Washington Doane was born in 1799 and served as bishop of New Jersey from 1832 to his death in 1859. In 1837 he founded St. Mary's Hall now Doane Academy to provide a classical education for girls. It was the first such boarding school for girls in the United States. In 1846 he founded Burlington College a school for boys. He also wrote well-known hymns and published a volume of poems Songs by the Way in 1824. <br /> <br /> In 1843 Doane published this anonymous booklet combining in the title the derogatory term for the movement with a traditional anti-Roman Catholic slogan used here out of context. An appendix p. 69-72 features “Mr. Perceval's Letter To the Editor of the Irish Ecclesiastical Journal†signed Arthur P. Perceval “Formerly of Oriel now of All Souls’ College Oxford†and an “Advertisement†at the front of the work identifies the Bishop of New Jersey as the author.<br /> <br /> OCLC shows 26 holdings predominantly at seminaries. Nerval's letter Louis Desessart Théophile Gautier's appointed publisher co-published Nervals play Léo Burckart with Barba in 1839. Following financial difficulties he was forced to take refuge «in that sad and charming city of Brussels». The three friends wrote this letter from Paris where they had reunited following Nervals long journey to the East: «I spent six months in Egypt; then three months in Syria four months in Constantinople and the rest en route. Its quite beautiful. I only enjoy myself while traveling and try to live twice as much as I can.» This journey deeply impressed Théophile Gautier who would only travel to Turkey and Egypt years later: «I am in Paris and wish I were in Cairo from where Gérard is returning.» The exoticism of distant lands starkly contrasts with the melancholy and severity of Europe: «How sad Paris is when one returns from sunlit countries.» Nerval And in Paris far from dreams of escape life means toil and melancholy: «We are like sick people who are never comfortable anywhere. I think the good times are gone and the golden hours of the past when we spoke such wise follies will never return. Whats the point of living if we must work and cannot see our friends or write to them or do anything we would like» Gautier The two writers express great compassion for their friends Belgian exile with Brussels appearing as the capital of spleen: «What! Youre still in that sad and charming city of Brussels! . Condition: Fine with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution this vivid watercolor scene Lively herd of running Zebras was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur or armchair traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting as was the custom and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. 189071697Yokohama 1890. Fine. Yokohama 1890 12 x 18 cm autre Collection composed of 12 wet collodion photographs printed on albumen paper and hand-colored. The coloring of the photographs uses the traditional technique of distemper painting natural pigments mixed with glue applied with a brush. Photographers thus employed painters rather than the watercolorists used for prints. Album formed of two wooden boards covered with brown fabric showing visible fibers bound Japanese-style as an accordion. Each fold-out recto and verso presents 6 photographs: on the recto animated scenes views of landscapes and cities on the verso figures. This presentation is traditional for travel albums ""views and costume"" which the Japanese would later adopt. Each photograph: 8.7x13.2cm. The first 2 photographs have faded making the red pigments of the paint very visible as a result. For the second panel the first and 6th photographs have also faded likewise leaving the red pigments used very visible. The fifth has 2 scratched areas revealing the white of the paper. Foxing in the margins and on some photographs. The views represent famous sights along the Tokaido route the Meiji temple twice a busy street with lanterns a view of Mount Fuji with the famous wooden bridge. The earliest collections with Felice Beato showed only views of old Japan in black and white and representation and demand evolved. These Japanese views are very close in their staging and framing to the art of printmaking. One finds the Japanese taste already illustrated by prints for famous sites. Furthermore one sees almost no men in photographs from this period because the photographs were meant to represent contemporary Japan and men were now dressed in Western fashion; there were no more samurai. This is why women are represented in more than 70 percent of photographs from this period and in this collection one sees only one man a rickshaw puller. On this subject it was always geishas who were used for the photographs. All the studios thus had contracts with geisha houses whom they had pose for all scenes: musicians etc. The photographs of women: A woman with a fan 3 women holding hands 2 women in a carriage 3 women dancing the women of a geisha house. One must note that any attribution to a photographer is difficult due to the very history of photography in Japan because all the European studios and the first Japanese studios were bought by Japanese and the plates continued to be exploited under the name of the new photographer. Few albums and photographs bear a signature or studio mark. For example we know that Beato left professional photography in 1872. Baron von Stillfried left Japan definitively in 1881. The same year Kimbei Kusakabe 1841-1934 student of Beato and Stillfried opened his own studio in Yokohama. He would buy back part of his two masters' negatives four years later and regularly reprint them. hardcover

Hardcover bound in the original black cloth titled in gilt on the spine with decorations in blind on the covers. Half-title engraved frontispiece title pages vii-xii and pages 1-360. Profusely illustrated with portraits of the subjects. The front cover endpaper half-title and frontispiece are detached. The title page is detached and a tear through the center of it has been repaired with clear document tape. The rear cover and pages 359/360 are detached. The corner of page 153 is torn without any loss of text. A fair complete copy.</p><p>Exceedingly rare First edition printed by Robert Malcolm of Glasgow.</p><p>The book was reprinted in 1845 with the title "Curiosities of Biography or Memoirs of Remarkable Men.: Illustrated by one hundred characteristic portraits". Apart from the title a page-by-page comparison of the two books shows them to be identical in content and even in pagination. The only difference to be found is the absence in the 1845 reprint of an engraving of Napoleon on page xii at the foot of the contents page. Although the 1845 edition has been represented by many sources as the first edition it is indeed a reprint of the rare 1842 edition.</p><p>The work contains 131 separate biographies. Nearly 100 of these include portraits of the subjects. He was a friend of Byron and Scott and an active participant in the early 19th-century literary fascination with the Gothic. Most famous for "Melmoth the Wanderer" this is a more conventional romance set in Dublin. Rare. This is Volume One only of the original three a Very Good Minus copy. Original calf binding with fancy gilt ruling; five raised bands on the spine; endpapers and page ends are marbled. Clean text; v 275 pages. Front paste-down has a bookplate of barrister and author Alan Maxcey Galer. The textblock is Near Fine very bright and clear without foxing. However the binding has split at the spine causing the separation of the front cover and starting of the rear. Please note this condition issue.
