br. Esiste una strana corrispondenza nella poesia e nei romanzi di Victor Hugo: guardare una donna - desiderarla - equivale a inabissarsi nelle profondità di un oceano. Vedere la donna? «Vedere l'interno del mare». Vedere una tempesta levarsi? Sentire la fragranza del desiderio che cresce. Come può la scrittura rendere sensibili i tormenti psichici quand'essi sono anche tormente fisiche, assimilabili ai fenomeni naturali, persino aerei, atmosferici? Siamo qui chiamati, al di là dell'esegesi letteraria, a immergerci nella vasta fenomenologia del mondo visibile: infatti l'equivalenza di cui s'è detto si manifesta materialmente, sopra ogni foglio, nell'immanenza stessa delle mirabili immagini create da Hugo. Ipocondriache chimere che svelano, nel pittore-poeta, un grande lucreziano in grado di decifrare il «fondo delle cose»; conferendo a ogni cosa umana l'immensità di una tempesta, a ogni cosa naturale l'intensità di un gesto corporeo animato dalla passione.
