1899EB015<p>Early Scribner's edition of <em>The Phantom 'Rickshaw and Other Stories</em> issued as Volume V in <em>The Writings in Prose and Verse of Rudyard Kipling</em>. The title page is dated <strong>1898</strong> as in all early printings of this volume but the physical characteristics of the binding burgundy cloth gilt elephant medallion Art Nouveau floral spine design and deckled edges indicate a <strong>Scribner's printing from approximately 1899–1900</strong>.</p><p>Bound in deep red cloth with bright gilt spine ornamentation and the classic gilt elephant-head medallion on the front board. Includes deckled page edges crisp typography and the dual swastika good-luck symbols that appeared in Kipling's works prior to WWII.</p><p>Stories include <em>The Phantom 'Rickshaw</em> <em>The Man Who Would Be King</em> <em>My Own True Ghost Story</em> <em>The Strange Ride of Morrowbie Jukes</em> and others. A handsome early collected-works volume from the first years of Scribner's authorized Kipling set.</p><p><strong>Condition: Good.</strong></p><p>Red cloth boards with bright gilt front medallion and gilt spine decoration. Spine shows sunning with fraying at the head and light wear at the foot. Boards exhibit scattered water marks and minor surface spotting. Corners lightly bumped. Binding remains sound pages clean and unmarked with deckled edges and natural age toning.
