Neuwertiges Exemplar.Der Essay knüpft an die Jean-Paul-Biographie des Verfassers von 2013 an. In ihr wurde das Leben des Schriftstellers als ganz von seinem Schreiben, seiner Autorschaft her definiertes verstanden. Von dieser Moderne um 1800 in Deutschland ergeben sich erstaunliche Parallelen zu der in Frankreich um 1900, zu Marcel Prousts das Leben verbrauchender Arbeit, die er die Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit nennt. Ein Höhepunkt der Literaturkritik des 20. Jahrhunderts ist Elias Canettis Analyse der Schreibprozesse bei Kafka – diese vielleicht eindringlichste Analyse zur Entstehung lebenaufzehrender Literatur überhaupt steht bei den vorliegenden Betrachtungen Pate. Der Blick in den bislang noch unveröffentlichten Nachlass Canettis ermöglicht eine Vertiefung des Verständnisses. Gottfried Kellers »Realismus« kann als Einspruch gegen derlei Absolutheitsansprüche der Literatur gegenüber der Wirklichkeit gelesen werden. Allerdings wird dieses satirische Verlachen seinerseits durch Zweideutigkeit hintertrieben. Dies scheint auch Robert Walser erkannt zu haben, ein hellsichtiger Leser Gottfried Kellers ebenso wie Jean Pauls und seinerseits ein Virtuose der Anverwandlung des Lebens als Literatur. Colto, sensibile e aperto alle nuove idee, scrisse un breve saggio insieme a Sigmund Freud e fu intimo amico di Alfred Adler. Nato in Moravia nel 1881 in una famiglia ebrea, combatté con onore nella Grande guerra e seppe comunicare ai propri allievi una straordinaria passione per i classici e la filosofia umanistica. Ateo e contrario al sionismo, sposò Amelie Pollack, brillante studentessa di matematica e fisica con la quale sviluppò una relazione profonda, sincera e anticonvenzionale. Morì nel 1943 in un campo di concentramento, dopo avere assistito incredulo e impotente all'affermarsi della cieca follia nazista. Il nipote Peter Singer ne ricostruisce le vicende.
