Anna Richards Brewster 1870-1952 began painting at age ten studied with William Merritt Chase and John LaFarge and trained at Acadmie Julian in Paris. She was a prolific painter of landscapes portraits and illustrations who showed her work regularly until the 1930s. In this volume curator Judith Kafka Maxwell revives Brewster's work while exploring the contradictions common to women like her--those whose professional ambitions were neither supported nor encouraged by institutions or patrons. An introduction by Wanda M. Corn situates the artist in her social and cultural milieu and essays by art historian Leigh Culver and American historian Kirsten Swinth explore the works themselves the artist's education and the post-Civil War rise of women artists. Moving and precious signed autograph inscription from Maurice Blanchot to his sister Marguerite on a card mounted on the first endpaper: ""Chère Marg ce livre qui n'est pas un livre mais qui te dit en ces jours si sombres ma fidèle ma profonde affection. Maurice."" ""Dear Marg this book which is not a book but which tells you in these dark days my faithful one my deep affection. Maurice."" Envelope bearing Marguerite Blanchot's address written by her brother Maurice mounted on the half-title page. Marguerite Blanchot renowned organist at the cathedral of Chalon remained all her life in the family home with her mother and aunt. ""She gradually became for the family like the memory of origins."" Very close to Maurice she corresponded regularly with the writer who showed her great gratitude for her devotion to their invalid mother. While Blanchot's intense affection for his mother and sister shows through in his dedications we know almost nothing of their relationship. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot Christophe Bident reveals however: ""Marguerite Blanchot venerated her brother Maurice. Very proud of him . she attached great importance to his political ideas . She read a great deal . They telephoned each other corresponded. At a distance they shared the same natural authority the same concern for discretion."" Blanchot indeed sent her numerous works from his library maintaining with her a continuous intellectual bond. Con un metodo filologico che si basa sulla lettura del testo in lingua originale, l’autore indaga il saggio di Günther Anders su Franz Kafka (1951). Attraverso l’attenzione per la lettera, sono emerse le rotte battute da Anders, la sua strategia argomentativa, i termini chiave della critica. Trattandosi di un commento, il testo segue la scansione del saggio di Anders in quattro parti: la prima riguarda il rovesciamento in Kafka tra al di là e al di qua, la seconda lo stile kafkiano, la terza il ruolo estetico della bellezza e quello “paralizzante” delle immagini, la quarta il nucleo teologico. Nel corso dell’analisi emerge da una parte il pregio di Anders di aver messo in luce il rovesciamento come categoria chiave per la decodifica dell’intera opera kafkiana, dall’altra l’insostenibilità del metodo perseguito, il quale muove continuamente dal personaggio all’autore e da questo all’uomo, evidente tradimento del principio base di ogni critica letteraria.
