I due saggi raccolti in "Ulisse grammofono" sono l'elaborazione più articolata del confronto tra il pensiero di Derrida e l'opera di Joyce: confronto di cui si trovano tracce in diversi testi del filosofo franco-algerino e che in "Ulisse grammofono" prende la forma di un corpo a corpo linguistico, di una battaglia in cui le lingue vengono spinte al limite del dicibile, là dove risuona l'affermazione incondizionata come ospitalità donata all'altro: oui, yes, sì. Tra confessioni, brevi racconti di viaggio, analisi filosofiche, i saggi ruotano attorno ad alcuni temi privilegiati: il grammofono, il telefono e l'inesauribile sì di Molly nell'"Ulisse"; la guerra degli idiomi dichiarata da Dio in "Finnegans Wake"; l'impossibilità di definirsi un esperto di Joyce.

Il saggio di ECO occupa 37 pagine dello stralcio (da p. 63 a p. 100) ed è seguito da un saggio di Giafranco Chiodaroli sul cinema, che occupa le restanti 17 pp. ECO si occupò di Joyce anche successivamente, nel 1962 con una parodia di Finnegan's Wake, nel 1982 (Le poetiche di Joyce, Bompiani) e nel 2009 spiattellando le stroncature con cui era stato accolto dai grandi scrittori italiani negli anni '20 e '30. Fu un commento casuale della sorella Eve, nostalgica dei cinematografi di Trieste, a scatenare in Joyce un'inedita frenesia imprenditoriale: a Dublino mancava una sala cinematografica, e lui stesso vi avrebbe rimediato. Senza un soldo, se non quelli spesi per l'alcol, Joyce si mise alla ricerca di finanziatori. E li trovò. A fine ottobre affittò un edificio al 45 di Mary Street e due mesi dopo il primo cinematografo dublinese, il Volta, aprì i battenti. Ma l'avventura, purtroppo, non andò come aveva sperato. Una nuova pagina nella storia di James Joyce, in cui si racconta anche il rapporto tra il cinema e le sue opere: riuscirà il grande schermo a riprodurre la ricchezza e la voluttuosità della prosa joyciana senza che il film si riduca a mere e asciutte «citazioni dal libro con diapositive»?

FERRERO condivise con Lombroso l'approccio positivistico; collaborò alla «Critica sociale» di Filippo Turati e a studi di sociologia e di antropologia criminale; sensibile ai problemi sociali, benché non socialista, durissimo contro Crispi che lo perseguì come sovversivo, però ottenne di fare con Claudio Treves questo viaggio in Germania, Svezia, Russia. Gran lettura per noi, lo fu anche per JOYCE, cui ispirò anche contenuti fondamentali per "ULYSSES"! (cfr. G. Marchiori e G. De Angelis, Ulisse. Guida alla lettura, p. 24).
