Piracy based on the plates for the 9th printing of the Paris edition though varying in font and punctuation and replete with numerous printer’s errors: Jonthan for Jonathan Cape on By the Same Writer page divisional numeral I page and flyleaf page reversed page 359 numbered to inner margin text inverted to page 323 third line from bottom uneven trimming to pages 359-382; 419-446 et al. Text block appears to have been sewn into previous binding with visible stitch holes at first blank page and in between sections of text ex. pgs 34-35. A few pages contain mild soil marks to edges and small creasing to paper particularly at inner edges small closed tear to fore edge of page 533. Nonetheless defects are marginal as pages of this edition are often found in much rougher condition. Contents clean unmarked and complete. An edition 2000-3000 copies many which were seized by the the Society for the Suppression of Vice on October 5th 1929. “Copies of this pirated ninth edition reached Paris and were imported into the United States as genuine copies. One of these sent by Joyce to Bennet A. Unsurprisingly for a book with such a chequered publication history there are a number of typographical differences from earlier editions. Despite Joyce correcting the proofs while on holiday in Copenhagen in early 1936 several mistakes were later spotted. The bibliography by Peter Pertzoff had been submitted without further corrections or acknowledgment from Joyce. Pertzoff was apparently surprised to see it appear inaccuracies and all in this edition.The typography and design was overseen by Allen Lane and Joyce's representative Paul Leon. 1891189414Lucknow: Printed at the N. N. Sivapuri Press 1891. Siege of Lucknow from the most exposed post - an Indian Rebellion eyewitness account of extraordinary rarity First and only edition - signed by the author on the last page - of this detailed firsthand account of the defence of Lucknow written by Matthew Rutland Joyce 1828-1911 in Uncovenanted Service the lower echelons of the ICS in the Judicial Garrison. Only the second recorded copy the Oxford University copy apparently lacking the initial leaf with excerpted passages from Tennyson's "The Defence of Lucknow". Joyce prefaces his narrative by explaining that it was written "for the information of those of my relatives and friends who were battling for their lives in other parts of the country or who were too young to remember". With no pretensions to being a "faithful history" of the period it is "simply a chronicle of such occurrences within the Residency defences. as memory retained and can be interesting to none but those few active participants in the great struggle who yet survive" p. i. The story which follows is all the more fascinating for its personlalized focus naming many of the most familiar names but introducing a cast of lesser-known characters to the famous story further broadening and humanizing the standard narrative. Presented in diary form the text follows Joyce through the preparation of the defences his training with an antiquated Brown Bess for the volunteer infantry brushes with death from both fever and enemy fire to the final relief and evacuation of the Residency "There was some confusion and heartaches in the matter packing up our belongings for the orders were peremptory that nothing but things necessary were to be taken out; and it certainly went against the grain to leave behind cherished articles". Joyce is a lively and personable storyteller his recollections of "the eternal din of musketry" of the rebels'' profligate firing the privations of the diminishing rations and the imminent threat of death are recounted in vivd vernacular style and his tales are often self-deprecating. In recounting what was despite his many "narrow escapes" "first and only" wound he explains how he would not have alluded to it "had there not been so much of the ludicrous about it". During the assault on Phillips's Garden which was being menaced by a rebel battery Joyce crafts himself "a capital loop-hole embrasure fashion" out of "substantial bricks" on top of the mud-brick wall overlooking the position. The result being much admired. While on watch he spots movement at the gun and foolishly fires off a round in the hope of "staying their purpose for a moment of two" which of course registers the rebels' aim and the gun was "presently laid and discharged". Joyce dives behind the wall for cover the shot clips the masonry of the house behind the shock dislodging the topmost bricks of his loop-hole which fell on his "bowed head and laid it open causing all over and inside it a sensation such as I had never felt before" pp. 71-3. Joyce was on the staff of the Judicial Garrison the Judicial Commissioner's Kutchery or Court House post a very exposed position during the siege. He and his brother Richard Christopher who served with the volunteer cavalry "Radcliffe's Horse" covering the withdrawal from the debacle at Chinhut were in the Uncovenanted Service a perhaps under-represented group in the history of British India. Originally introduced to offer opportunities for Indians or Anglo-Indians to join the Indian Civil Service covering key but less specialized administrative roles at commensurately lower salaries and with thinner employment rights the service had already began to attract a wider constituency before the expansion of the post-Rebellion government. By the 1880s voices were being raised on their behalf in the parliament to secure a levelling up of the benefits for their vital contributions to the increasingly complex bureaucracy of the Raj. Joyce was born in Agra post-Rebellion he was for a time curator of the Lucknow Museum and the donor of a number of specimens to the natural history section he was buried in the Residency Cemetery Lucknow. Beyond this we have been unable to trace earlier family connections with India and unfortunately within the text he tells us little of his background. Small octavo pp. ii iv 119 1. Presented in the original gold foil-covered slipcase alternate slipcases incorporating green and red suede paper were also used. With a Preface by C.K. Ogden and a portrait of the author by Constantin Brâncuși printed in photogravure with tissue overlay. A Fine clean and tight volume in a later protective wrapper housed in a very good original gold foil-covered slipcase. Minor discoloration to extreme head and tail of cover as shown in photos. Slipcase base is slightly unhinged at fore-edge; top edge shows a 2cm cello tape repair as shown in photos. Tales Told of Shem and Shaun was the second finepress book to be published containing fragments of Joyce's 'Work in Progress' toward 'Finnegans Wake'. Harry and Caresse Crosby's Black Sun Press was an exemplary Parisian fine press publishing house which brought together a community of diverse artists to produce deluxe editions capturing the modernist scene in the late twenties and thirties. Originally founded as Éditions Narcisse and a vehicle to print their own works by mid-1928 The Black Sun Press had become a vital channel between artists and writers and a select group of readers and collectors who appreciated finely bound hand-set books. Working in Rue Cardinale with Master Printer Roger Lescaret the press issued limited editions of the first unexpurgated editions of D.H. Lawrence's 'Sun' and 'The Escaped Cock' Kay Boyle's 'Short Stories' Archibald MacLeish's 'Einstein' Eugene Jolas's 'Secession in Astropolis' a volume of 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses' and Hart Crane's 'The Bridge' among other works. After Harry Crosby's death in 1929 Caresse continued the work of Black Sun Press issuing editions of Joyce's 'Collected Poems' 1936 and works by Proust Faulkner Hemingway Crevel Eluard and Ernst Bukowski and Olson.</p> The Black Sun Press paperback

Small 4to in a handsome contemporary binding of three-quarter dark-blue morocco over blue cloth boards the spine divided by bands ruled in gilt one compartment lettered in gilt. The original blue wrappers printed in white as issued by Shakespeare and Company in Paris are bound in at the front and back. 6 735 pp. A very desirable copy in contemporary binding the paper still quite fresh and all very sturdy and sound. A handsome book with only light evidence of age. ONE OF THE KEY PRINTINGS BY SYLVIA BEACH’S SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY OF THIS LANDMARK OF 20th CENTURY LITERATURE. It is the first reprinting of the work to use entirely reset type. The work was accomplished with Joyce’s participation. The copy is bound as is often found on printings of the period in a simple style designed to draw little attention to itself due the controversy of the text within. In all a highly collectable copy.<br> ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Inscribed first edition association copy of this effort to unpuzzle Joyce's famously inscrutable masterpiece - signed to the famed Jungian analyst Erlo Van Waveren. Erlo Van Waveren practiced psychotherapy in New York with his wife Ann for more than four decades. Both studied with Carl Jung and were regular attendees at the Jung Institute. Campbell himself was famously influenced by Jung and edited an edition of his work an influence heavily reflected in this Campbell's first book which investigates Joyce's "monomyth" an idea deeply indebted to the renowned psychologist's idea of the "collective unconscious." The van Waverans were also instrumental in the establishment of the Bollingen Series which published Campbell's most important work THE HERO WITH A THOUSAND FACES. It was Elro and Ann who introduced Paul and Amy Mellon benefactors of the series to Jung after whose Bollingen Tower the series was named and whose work served as its driving influence.
