19349192New York: Random House 1934. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Octavo. xvii 1 767 1 pp. First authorized American edition first printing. As issued in publisher's linen with title in black and red; lacking the dust jacket as usual. A better copy than often found with the typical soiling to the light colored binding but less than usual and without any notable wear; bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown; contents clean. A very good copy of a book not often thus.

John J. Slocum in his bibliography of James Joyce notes that the first authorized American edition after a 1927 pirated edition was issued in January of 1934. While Slocum refers to the first 100 copies off the press in order to secure copyright shortly after the Woolsey decision as the "first printing" and the subsequent 10300 copies as the "second printing" it is widely considered that these were not distinct printings but a pause in printing while securing copyright in as timely a manner as possible. Ellmann writes of this in his biography of Joyce noting that the first 100 off the press came in January and the balance in February once copyright was secured p. 667. Bibliographers note no way to distinguish between the first 100 and the final 10300. This is one of those from the first printing. Random House noted the printing on subsequent issues from the press. January 1936 issue Volume VII Number 1. 10 1/8" x 7 1/8" illustrated wrappers 64 pp. with illustrations and photographs nudes. Cover artist is uncredited but is certainly either Enoch Bolles or George Quintana see scan. Over-eighteen purchase only. Sturdy condition; some spine loss toward bottom some cover creasing one small chip. Pages toned at margins but quite supple. Quite bright and unsoiled compared to typical examples. A strong Very Good perhaps better. A scarce issue from of a thirties girlie mag which is in fact scarce throughout its 7 year run 1931-1937. A classic from a classic genre collectible both for its cover by either of the equally enigmatic Enoch Bolles and George Quintana but also for its standard-fare contents: 16 full-page B&W nude photographs soft by today's standards erotica short stories and B&W illustrations for those stories which are often rather art-deco-y and rather collectible in their own right. With the exception of the occasional signed cover the illustrations in this genre were generally unsigned and uncredited and the authors of the stories were pseudonymic; while the genre was certainly not "indecent" enough to be banned these magazines were not something most artists photographers and authors particularly wanted credit for at that time. Stories in this issue: "When in Rome" Michael Villon; "Lovely Pirate" Gene Dolby; "Not So Dummy!" Frank Roberts; "The Jeweled Garter" Joyce Carroll; "Honey Cake!" Gloria Dean; "Just For Excitement" Arthur Wallace; "The Rainy Day" Nona Benford; and "High Hat" Ralph Gordon. Seasoned with a variety of sometimes rather intriguing ads and letters to the editor as well. Rare piece of periodical history. L100

D.M. Publishing unknown
