Per Italo Calvino ("Perché leggere i classici", 1991) può a buon diritto definirsi un classico quel libro che ha la capacità di "non finire mai di dire quello che ha da dire". Lascito sempiterno, cioè, che sa parlare ad ogni epoca e ad ogni uomo. Deduzione logica è che anche gli autori di simili opere sono a loro volta dei classici. Lo è certamente James Joyce, che si colloca non solo fra i padri fondatori del Modernismo, ma fra gli scrittori più insigni di tutti i tempi. Certo il suo "Ulisse" ha mutato dalle fondamenta il genere romanzo, aprendogli prospettive inusitate, che ancora sono da esplorare per intero, ma anche "Gente di Dublino", il "Ritratto dell'artista da giovane" e l'audacissimo "Finnegans Wake" sono opere che, nelle loro specificità, hanno aperto vie nuove alla narrativa universale. Con un'argomentazione agile quanto rigorosa, si ripercorre la parabola esistenziale e creativa di Joyce, ricostruendo il clima culturale nel quale ebbe ad agire il grande irlandese, rendendo conto delle caratteristiche formali e concettuali dell'intera sua opera, infine individuando gli autori che, tanto in Europa che altrove, lo hanno avuto come modello reale o ideale. E più tardi Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Lacan e lui, James Joyce, alla ricerca di un editore per il monumentale romanzo che stava terminando. Il loro punto d'incontro era una piccola libreria in rue de l'Odèon, Shakespeare and Company, fondata da una giovane americana approdata alla Ville Lumière nel 1916, appassionata di letteratura e tenace sostenitrice di nuovi talenti: Sylvia Beach. Fu lei a intuire con lungimiranza il genio di Joyce e a pubblicarne l'opera capitale, "L'Ulisse", che molti illustri editori avevano in precedenza bollato come "incomprensibile" e "oscena".
