brossura Esistono diverse biografie di Joyce. Quel che manca è una storia. Questo libro parla di una vita, e di come le esperienze fatte, le parole dette o scritte e gli incontri casuali inneschino nella nostra mente pensieri e connessioni, e in quella degli artisti grandi intuizioni estetiche ed esistenziali. Fu Joyce a scrivere nel Finnegans Wake una meravigliosa parola inventata: beogrefright. Sta chiaramente per biography, ma contiene anche il virus della paura, dello spavento (fright), e quello del male nella fantasia fanciullesca: ogre, ovvero "orco". Una biografia, infatti, come una storia, nel saper evocare quelle forze occulte che rendono possibile il miracolo della transustanziazione di esistenze in inchiostro, può, o anzi deve, anche spaventare. Perché la nostra vita non è inchiostro, ma il nostro ricordo, il ricordo di noi stessi, in certi casi lo diventerà. E questa cosa può far paura. Esiste una via d'accesso abissale, eppure rivelatrice, alla vita di Joyce e alla trasformazione di quei percorsi oscuri nella sua opera: sono i sette mesi e sette giorni tormentati che trascorse a Roma. Da qui si può ricostruire il filo sotterraneo e segreto dei misteri del più grande scrittore occidentale del Novecento. Si coglie la scintilla da cui ebbe origine l'Ulisse. Prendono vita i personaggi e gli episodi da cui scaturirono le paure e le ossessioni che attraversano tutto il romanzo. Ci si imbatte in una serie di straordinarie rivelazioni sull'identità del modello di Bloom. Si tocca da vicino la nascita dell'interesse per il socialismo e l'anarchismo, che portano nelle opere un forte afflato antitotalitario. Una nuova narrazione di pochi mesi misteriosi ma fondamentali per accedere al segreto della vita e dell'opera di Joyce. Sono passati cento anni da quando uscì l'Ulisse. Qui, per la prima volta, si affronta il buco nero della vita di Joyce: i sette mesi e sette giorni che trascorse a Roma. Un periodo abissale e oscuro, che spiega molti misteri dello scrittore, a partire dalla scintilla che diede origine al più grande romanzo del Novecento.

Il saggio di BENCO (che era direttore di quotidiano a Trieste quando JOYCE, suo amico, era là) occupa 16 pagine, in cui parla dell'uomo, della sua famiglia, ma anche delle sue opere, e dei criteri di lettura; del 'Portrait' (Dedalus), mentre "Ulysses" cominciava ad apparire a capitoli nel 1918 tra contestazioni puritane in USA; si stava già parlando del futuro "Work in progress". JOYCE (Dublino 1882 - Zurigo 1941) nsegnò inglese a Trieste dal 1905 al 1915, poi di nuovo dopo la guerra, prima di trasferirsi a Parigi nel 1919. 'Ulysses, terminato nel 1918, fu segnalato per primo in Italia da Benco; fu pubblicato a Parigi nel 1922. Il fascicolo in-8° (cm. 24,2), bross. edit., è completo delle sue 128 pagine e contiene inoltre: 1) 1) Concetto MARCHESI, "VIRGILIO", 10 pp. 2) 15 pagine filologiche di Luigi Foscolo BENEDETTO sul Cantico delle creature di San Francesco. 3) Aldo SORANI.
