Il joua pourtant un rôle essentiel dans la défense et la diffusion de la théorie de l'évolution, ce qui lui valut le surnom de "bouledogue de Darwin". Ses textes ont été diffusés en France par Émile Alglave, directeur de la Bibliothèque scientifique internationale et de la Revue des cours scientifiques (Revue Rose).
