Huxley challenged the paleontologist Richard Owen who asserted that a human's brain differed qualitatively from those of other mammals. After a series of dissections of primate brains Huxley disproved Owen's claim that only humans possessed a Hippocampus minor a portion of the brain now known as the calcar avis.Garrison & Morton 165. Aldous Huxley's "Crome Yellow" published in 1921 is a satirical novel that reflects the cultural and intellectual milieu of the early 20th century. Set at an English country estate it offers a dissection of the aristocracy's decline portraying a cast of eccentric characters grappling with existential and intellectual questions. The novel serves as a precursor to Huxley's more famous works including "Brave New World" and explores themes of modernity individualism and the tension between tradition and progress. Through its witty critique of society "Crome Yellow" provides a glimpse into the intellectual concerns of its time and serves as a valuable piece of social and literary history. "Scott's legacy has been buffered to and fro like the Antarctic wind over the past 100 years. In the aftermath of his death which was not known about back home for almost another year he was hailed as a hero by a declining Empire desperately in need of one. In later years he has been traduced as an incompetent indecisive amateur. Somewhere between the two a middle ground can be found emphasising his team's scientific discoveries and the extreme conditions they faced without either condemning or cheerleading. Regardless it is difficult not to feel a small Edwardian lump rising at the back of your throat when you read one of the final diary entries: 'Had we lived I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood endurance and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale.'" - Iain Hollingshead Smith Elder & Co. Ltd., London, 1913. hardcover
