In this work Huxley synthesizes decades of research into muscular physiology offering both a historical account of earlier experimental work and a detailed exposition of his own landmark contributions from the 1950s onward. The text is richly illustrated with diagrams micrographs and comparative schematics that elucidate such topics as filament overlap cross-bridge mechanics tension generation and ATP-driven force cycles. It remains one of the most accessible and authoritative retrospectives on the biophysical basis of muscle function.

This copy is personally inscribed by Sir Andrew Huxley to the eminent physicist feminist philosopher of science and MacArthur Fellow Evelyn Fox Keller dated August 2001. This is an exceptional association between two influential figures in the history and philosophy of biological science. The inscription reads: “For Prof. Evelyn Fox Keller / With best wishes / Andrew Huxley / August 2001.†Books signed by Huxley are scarce; association copies to major scientific figures are extremely rare making this a significant item for collectors of physiology Nobel Prize authors and the intellectual history of 20th-century science.

Condition & Binding: Hardcover volume in its original publisher’s boards protected by a grey protective cover/dust jacket with gilt titling to the front and spine.
