This is a Very Good Minus copy of the First English Edition noted by the publisher as the "sole authorized version." Translated and with a Preface by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly. Maroon cloth binding with titling and decorations in gilt on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xi 386 pages with a two-page advert in the rear. Containing 94 wood engravings by E. Thevenot. There is no publication date but bibliographers agree on 1895. Bumped rubbing to the margins endpapers tanned. The spine has faded but the gilt remains presentable. The signatures have cracked at page 144-145 hence the "minus" condition but the book remains sound otherwise. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus/No Jacket. Illus. by E. Summary: The arrival of Abbé Faujas in the provincial town of Plassans has profound consequences for the community and for the family of François Mouret in particular. Faujas and his mother come to lodge with François his wife Marthe and their three children and his cousin Marthe quickly falls under the influence of the priest. Ambitious and unscrupulous Faujas gradually infiltrates into all quarters of the town intent on political as well as religious conquest. Intrigue slander and insinuation tear the townsfolk apart creating suspicion and distrust and driving the Mourets to ever more extreme actions.
