Henry Wilde a wealthy individual from Manchester England who used his self-made fortune to indulge his interest in electrical engineering. He invented the dynamo-electric machine or self-energising dynamo published in 1866. The machine was considered remarkable at the time especially since Wilde was fond of spectacular demonstrations such as the ability of his machine to cause iron bars to melt. </em> unknown

Tyssen Amherst. The hospital now known as Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children was originally formed by two Quaker sisters in 1867. This anthology includes a brief history of the hospital as well as 'Le Jardin des Tuileries' by Oscar Wilde 'Old Age - a Sonnet' by the Earl of Rosslyn 'Faith and Unfaith' by Lady Augusta Noel 'Hunter Quatermain's Story' by H. Rider Haggard 'Seekers For a City' by Andrew Lang and more. Illustrated with a frontispiece and in-text illustrations throughout by Randolph Caldecott W. Callow Tristram Ellis and more. Twenty pages of adverts to the rear. In a rebacked quarter cloth binding with paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Part of the original paper spine has been restored by rebacking. Some rubbing and discolouration to the boards and spine including a few light spots. Minor bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of the spine. Two tide marks to the rear board. Front hinge is a little strained rear hinge is starting but firm. Spots to the endpapers small tidemark to the rear endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. The title page bears his authorship as "C.3.3. Oscar Wilde" and the Roman numerals "Mdcccxcix" with no printing number indicated. This last edition authorized by Wilde for Smithers to print was dated 1899 as this one is. According to Wilde's bibliographer the seventh printing issued in an edition of 2000 copies was the first to use Wilde's full name on the title page. One of the classics of Nineties British literature. Octavo quarter white cloth over mustard-colored boards 31 pages plus blank material. First published in 1898 anonymously under Wilde's Prisoner identification number this is a copy of the Seventh Printing which was the first to identify him by name. This copy also states "Entered at the Library of Congress Washington U.S.A." indicating an American issue; a bit uncommon thus. Ochre cloth binding with gilt lettering on a linen spine. Clean text; 31 pages. This is a Very Good copy but there are some issues. The corners are bumped; there is a spot on the front cover and a few stains on the rear. Some cracking to the hingesgive it a shaken feel. Also there is a long inscription in Latin also done into English on the FFEP and a signature on the Dedication Page. Previous owner illustrated book plate with initials RBH on the front paste down. <br /> <br /> This copy includes a post card of Wesleyan Female College in Macon Georgia addressed to "Miss J. Troy Tuscaloosa Ala" from past President of the College Dupont Guerry. Also included is an undated Platt of land along the Savannah River. The Platt is chipped with significant loss at the bottom of the paper resulting in loss of dimensions of the land. The Platt does not name an owner. Laid inside the book is one page letter folded with two blank sides and an address on the back side dated March 7 1835 and signed at the bottom by R. H. Wilde. The letter appears to be addressed to B. F. Butler. The writing is difficult to decipher but the signature is neat and legible. Original quarter cream cloth spine lettered in gilt fawn cloth boards. Edges untrimmed. Grubby and stained extremities bruised and worn white stains to leading edges. Edges and endpapers toned and scantly foxed. Emmeline Garnett's sober ex libris to ffep plus inscription above in blue ink: "Emmeline Garnett/ July 1946/ St. Leonards". Else clean and bright. A robust copy of the last authorised edition published by Smithers; one of 2000 copies. Very good Composed during Wilde's exile in Bernavel-le-Grand with Robbie Ross following his two-year incarceration for gross indecency under the Labouchere Amendment Act and first published under his prison cell number at Reading 'C.3.3'. The popularity of Wilde's ballad afforded him a small income for the rest of his life having been forced to admit bankruptcy whilst imprisoned. Emmeline Garnett 1924-2022 was a "teacher author and historian par excellence" who wrote extensively about Lancashire including John Marsden's Will: The Hornby Castle Dispute 1780-1840 and Juvenile Offenders in Victorian Lancashire: W.
