The verso of the D/W is interesting as that it has details of other Century Omnibus books in this series. The English Catalogue of Books has this book being published in October 1934. Rare in D/W. Light wear to extremities particularly to top of spine. Foxing to edges of text block. Split to base of front hinge but binding remains solid. Previous owners stamp and signature. French text. First published in France 1893 the a one act tragedy was banned in the UK and was not performed publicly there until 1931. Original black cloth with orange titles to the spine in the first printing dustwrapper. A near fine copy the binding square and firm bright and fresh. The contents with some spotting to the closed text block edge and with the publisher's 'Archive Copy' stamp to the title page and front pastedown are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the very lightly rubbed dustwrapper that has a 'File Copy' stamp to the lower front panel and the publication year "38" in ink to the upper corner of the rear panel. The spine is just a touch faded however this is a very bright and crisp example. Correct publisher's price of 7/6 net to the spine. A scarce title. A detective story 'introducing Mr. Doty'. 19096207<p><strong>First edition of the complete translation of Wilde's '<em>The Young King</em>' in book format. First edition of this translation. </strong></p><p>This story was first translated into Russian and published in the magazine '<em>Pravda</em>' in June 1905. It subsequently appeared several times in different collections but in an abridged version most likely because the censorship authorities deemed that the story depicted injustices in the social system and ways to address them which could be potentially dangerous for the regime at that time Roznatovskaia 2000.<br />The translation was prepared by Wilde's foremost translator <strong>Mikhail Likiardopulo</strong> Popandopulo; 1883–1925 a journalist and secretary of the symbolist magazine '<em>Vesy</em>'. Likiardopulo produced fine translations of almost all of Wilde's works. He was acquainted with Alfred Douglas and Robert Ross who allowed him to copy Wilde's '<em>Florentine Tragedy</em>' a fragment of a never-completed play. Likiardopulo was reputedly a spy for Russia Greece and England. In 1919 he emigrated to Great Britain and his translations ceased to be published in Russia.<br />The illustrations and cover design were crafted by Armenian painter and art critic <strong>Vardges Sureniants</strong> 1860–1921. Sureniants studied at the Moscow School of Painting Sculpture and Architecture as well as the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. The illustrations were reproduced by zincography and the title text and headpieces are printed in brown.</p><p>OCLC locates three copies of this edition: in the British Library the Stanford Library and the UCLA Library.</p><p><em><strong>Please be advised that certain books in our collection may require an export permit for international shipping. Wilde discovered independently of Werner von Siemens who is usually credited for the invention the dynamo-electric machine. Despite Siemens being the one credited for the invention Wilde was the first to publish a paper describing it; this was communicated to the Royal Society by Michael Faraday in 1866.Joseph Sidebotham 1824-1882 was the first to practice photography in Manchester and of the most important local photographers in general. His interest was however not confined to photography; he was an amateur botanist entomologist and astronomer. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and lectured to the Mechanics Institute on astronomy and electro-magnetism. </em> unknown

Charles Ricketts was a well-known artist/illustrator and typographer most famous perhaps for his creation of The Dial co-founded with his partner Charles Shannon and for his work with the Vale Press. His name is often synonymous with that of Oscar Wilde as he was one of the two illustrators primarily associated with Wilde's work the other of course being Aubrey Beardsley. He and Shannon were friends & supporters of Wilde for whom Ricketts painted the hero of Wilde's short story The Portrait of Mr. W.H.<br /><br />'Jean Paul Raymond' was an imaginary author first introduced by Ricketts in his privately issued work Beyond the Threshold 1929. The typography was designed by Francis Meynell and the book was printed at the Dolphin Press six hundred copies being for sale in England and two hundred to Random House for sale in America.<br /> Dreyfus 8A. Paper appears to be slightly different colours in places. Print occasionally slightly faint. Binding is firm however book is well read with visible binding thread in places. pp 151-154 slightly loose. Boards have heavy edge wear with bumping and fraying to corners and rub wear all over.
