Written by Paul Lacroix. Lacroix was a French author and journalist best known by the pseudonym 'Bibliophile Jacob'. He also wrote 'The Middle Ages and Renaissance' 'Historical Costumes of France from the most Authentic Monuments' and more. Illustrated with a frontispiece thirty-one plates and numerous in-text engravings. Undated dated from Copac from copies held at the Sheffield Hallam University. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a very small amount of the spine lifting to the head of the front joint. These large-format volumes document France's intellectual and artistic developments across the 17th and 18th centuries from scientific advancements to decorative arts. Bound in quarter red leather with elaborate gilt designs on the spine boards and page edges these copies feature 33 chromolithographic plates and more than 500 in-text engravings. Subjects include medicine astronomy literary figures French porcelain and furniture design Jesuit expeditions and architectural commissions such as Versailles and the Panthéon. Vol. XVII 1882 contains 581 pages and 17 chromolithographs; Vol. XVIII 1878 includes 560 pages and 16 chromolithographs. We owe it to Paul Jacob who was a great bibliophile writer and scholar and curator of the Arsenal library. If the entire series has become a great classic in the field it is because it successfully combines the work of publisher printer binder historian illustrators and documentation and few books have ultimately achieved this amalgamation that we owe to Firmin-Didot at a time when books had become quite mediocre. With 21 chromolithographic plates and 350 engravings. Paul Lacroix 1806 - 1884 French author and journalist was born in Paris the son of a novelist. He is best known under his pseudonym of P.L. Jacob bibliophile or Bibliophile Jacob suggested by the constant interest he took in public libraries and books generally. Lacroix was extremely prolific. Over twenty historical romances alone came from his pen and he also wrote a variety of serious historical works including a history of Napoleon III and the life and times of the Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. He was the joint author of a five-volume work Le Moyen Age et la Renaissance 1847 a standard work on the manners customs and dress of that era. This book previously belonged to J. H. M. Springall and contains his bookplate. in a morocco binding. There is some wear to the extremities including rubbing and bumping to the corners.
