Published by Librairie des Bibliophiles the edition contains seven works: Zadig Micromégas Candide L'Ingénu La Princesse de Babylone Les Lettres d'Amabed and Le Taureau Blanc. Arsène Houssaye contributed the preface. The engravings created by Frédéric Auguste Laguillermie include a frontispiece and eleven full-page illustrations. Format is duodecimo 12mo issued in two volumes each bound in orange-brown leather with marbled paper boards and gilt-decorated spines. Fine. Binding remains firm; gilt is bright and unmarred. Boards are clean and square. The contents are intact and show no signs of foxing or wear. This volume holds the English translation of the French satire Candide ou l'Optimisme written by Voltaire a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment first published in 1759.The story follows a young man Candide who lives a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. This lifestyle is abruptly ended followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world.Translated with an introduction by Walter Jerrold.
