Rientrato a Napoli, ricoprì vari incarichi pubblici”. (Dbi, s.v.) Cossa 139 (47); Einaudi 2334; Gosdsmiths' 10640; Higgs 4941; INED 1948; Kress 6730 First edition of the Galiani’s treaty, written during his Paris stay, in which in an outwardly light form the most nevralgic economic subject of the time are discussed, particularly on freedom of commerce and monopoly. The “Dialogues” pulled the attention of Voltaire, that describes the book as pleasant “like a novel” but at the same time useful as like “our best serious books”. The “Abate” Galiani (Chieti 1728-Naples 1787) was an important Italian economist: his treaty on money (“Della moneta”, 1751) gave him international celebrity since his youth. Secretary of the Naples embassy in Paris, he was in touch with the most important thinkers of his time.

52468Full black moroccan leather binding 12° duodecimo edition. Spine professionally restored. Some wear and scratches on the binding but still very decorative. One of the earliest edition of this famous work of De Voltaire.According to G. Barber there are 17 editions of Candide printed in 1759 all with the same title. After his breakup with Frederick II 1754 Voltaire set up house near Geneva where the Cramer brother became his primary printers. Hoping to make a profit on their first edition of each new work these booksellers sent copies throughout Europe; counterfeiters their began their work. This is most likely a pirate copy dated 1759.A fascinating item that speaks to the economics and competitiveness of the early modern book trade especially with respect to counterfeits and forgeries. When Voltaires Candide was first published in 1759 the work achieved immense popularity in Europe despite broad condemnation from secular and religious leaders. To profit from the frenzy surrounding the workand the anonymity of its author who had adopted the pseudonym Monsieur le docteur Ralph many pirate copies have been published. This is one of the same year as the original.NL Een van de vroegste edities gepubliceerd in 1759. See the notes to the Renouard copy no. 1349- sale by Sotheby June 30 1834." The preface and notes cover 5 pages. ESTC; T137636.A nice clean tight set. A poem about Joan of Arc. From Wikipedia: "Voltaire was undoubtedly one of the most controversial writers and philosophers of the Enlightenment Age and The Maid of Orleans was also certainly one of his more contentious works. An epic and scandalous satire concerning the life of the not-yet-canonised Joan of Arc "the Maid of Orleans" the poem was outlawed burned and banned throughout a great portion of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries. Containing mockery and satirical commentary on the life and antics of its subject the poem itself has variously been described as "bawdy" and "licentious". Despite the often sexist and indecent contents of the text its notoriety and contraband status made it one of the most widely read texts concerning Joan of Arc for several centuries. Circulating throughout the banned regions by often surreptitious means the book was read by a large number of the populace. It was also disseminated by Voltaire himself to some of his colleagues and other members of the upper class the circle of people and the portion of society that the text was specifically intended for. The author 1762-1851 was the daughter of Thomas Townley Dawson she married first James Tisdall and then in 1798 Charles William Bury first Earl of Charleville. She was an invalid for many years. privately printed by Catherine Maria Bury, Countess of Charleville unknown books
