He was also the father of the perhaps former owner of the present volume Christopher Wren Jr. The Senior Wren's career having been established in full by 1669 he in that year at age 37 married his childhood neighbor "the 33-year-old Faith Coghill daughter of Sir John Coghill of Bletchingdon" and who for him bore two children "Gilbert born October 1672 who suffered from convulsions and died at about 18 months old and Christopher born February 1675. The younger Christopher was trained by his father to be an architect. It was this Christopher that supervised the topping out ceremony of St Paul's in 1710 and wrote the famous Parentalia or Memoirs of the family of the Wrens." Were it authentic the signature here would put him as having been roughly 62 years of age at signing 1675–1747; Christopher Wren Jr. "of Wroxall Abbey Warwickshire was a Member of Parliament" Wikipedia. xi 2 2-371 pp. All in an attractive early edition of an important work and perhaps with exceeding provenance.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. 16849Voltaire. Oeuvres Completes de Voltaire Tome Quarante-Deuxieme. Dictionnaire Philosophique M-P. 1784: Published by De l'Imprimerie de la Societe Litteraire most likely in Paris. First Edition. Octavo. Leather boards title plates to spine. 475 pages. Beautifully marbled edges and endpapers. 0 copies of this edition held in any U.S. Libraries or institutions per OCLC Worldcat. Includes entries on "Magie" "Messes" "Martyrs" "Oracles" "Plagiat" and more. The Dictionnaire was both extremely popular and widely censored making such an early first edition as this one quite uncommon. It was a lifelong project for Voltaire and represents the culmination of his views on Christianity God morality justice and other subjects. In very good condition. Leather scuffed and and Ex-Library stamp to the title page. Mild toning to pages but otherwise clean and textblock tight. In French.

The Enlightenment saw the creation of a new way of structuring information in books: alphabetization. Having witnessed first-hand the popularity and many advantages of this form Voltaire set to work on his own dictionary with some modifications. Unlike the lengthy-- and thus expensive-- compendiums of his peers Voltaire's Dictionnaire would be affordable and fit in one's pocket. "Revolutionary material" Voltaire commented "must be small enough for people to carry with them." The Dictionnaire espouses tolerance freedom of the press and decries the Catholic Church's injustices. While the Dictionnaire was immensely popular and sold out many times in Voltaire's lifetime it was also censored in many countries including Switzerland Geneva and France where this copy was printed. In these countries all available editions of the book were collected and burned in the town square. Voltaire who remained an anonymous author was repeatedly asked if he minded that the Dictionnaire was being burned but he calmly replied that he had no reason to be upset. unknown books
1795856N42London: C. Cooke 1795-1800 . First edition. Leather. Good. 5.5" by 3.5". Not Stated. Six pocket-sized leather bound novels published by Charles Cooke. Six pocket-size novels published by Charles Cooke. Cooke was a major publisher of pocket editions in the eighteenth century and is said to have commissioned over one thousand quality engravings for his pocket editions. With one plate to the Letters of a Peruvian Princess collated and complete. With two plates to Devil on Two Sticks collated and complete. With two plates to The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves collated and complete. With three plates to The History of Pompey the Little collated and complete. With two plates to the first volume of The Tales of Gen and three plates to the second volume collated and complete. The History of Pompey the Little by Francis Coventry is bound with Voltaire's Zadig. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of all volumes except Tales of the Gen. William Raynes has also inscribed his name in ink to the recto of the front endpaper of The History of Pompey the Little. It is possible that the set belonged to the socialist politician of the same name who was nominated as Derby's first Labour mayor in 1921. In a contemporary tree calf binding. Externally generally smart. With a scuff in the calf to the second volume of Tales of Gen. The Letters of a Peruvian Princess is missing a quarter of the spine label and the spine label to Pompey the Little is a little chipped. The spines are cracked with a little wear to the head and tail of the spines. The front joint of Launcelot Greaves is beginning to crack and the front hinge is starting to Devil on Two sticks The Adventures of Launcelot Greaves and both volumes of the Tales of the Gen but is firm across all four. The rear hinge is starting but firm to the second volume of Tales of the Gen. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the odd patch of light foxing. Good C. Cooke hardcover
