One of the most influential thinkers of the French Enlightenment François-Marie Arouet know by the nom de plum Voltaire was a resourceful and prolific writer. His works touched nearly every literary form including plays poems novels theoretical essays and scientific treatises. A forthright and candid advocate of civil liberties he frequently criticized the institutions of religious dogma and classism prevalent in 18th century France often doing so through satire to avoid censorship and imprisonment. One of the two prefaces is by John Quincy Adams the other is uncredited. Translator is uncredited. lii 408 lii 416 Volume Two repeats the prefaces. Illustrated with two engraved frontispieces. Half black calf brown paper covered boards spine with gilt bands at the top of the spine is the title and a sun design in gilt. Boards and spine are worn front hinge cracked article glued to the front pastedown alongside remnants of something else that had once been affixed there gift inscription on the front free endpaper and scattered foxing throughout good only.
