Osborne Steeden engraved frontispieces. iv 48 614 2 ads; iii 621. 7.5" x 5" POCKET REVOLUTION<br /> <br /> Voltaire's magnum opus was originally published anonymously in 1764 as the articles critiqued the Catholic Church and other societal institutions. He sought to craft a shorter dictionary of articles concerning the Enlightenment that would have a smaller format so people could carry revolutionary ideas in their pockets.<br /> <br /> Around 1870 Edward Trulove the radical publisher and printer of this edition took up publishing Voltaire's dictionary for the humanist cause. He was brought to trial due to his belief in freedom of speech and staunch atheism refusing to swear the Christian oath on the stand. Social reform thinkers like Florence Nightingale frequented his bookshop.<br /> <br /> This copy is a neat Des Forges Books De Luxe rebind with striking red marbled endpapers. E. Truelove unknown

Minor chipping to 6 out of 10 spine tops the worst being a 1 inch triangular piece of leather missing from the first volume spine top with some rubbing to the leather spines on some a little more than others however remarkably very little wear overall. Illustrated with plates portraits. reproductions of rare engravings steel plates photogravures and curious fac-similes done by the craftsman of the Hubert Guild. Extremities are slightly abraded a 3-inch split upper front joint boards yawn somewhat. Within textblock is quite sound; find original blanks faintly toned with flecks of soil v.I foxing to portrait occasional foxing in text v.II frontis heavily foxed some splashy foxing in text. A very good copy pace the split which in no way affects handling. Kneeland an intimate with Robert Dale Owen and Frances Wright was a frequent contributor to their Free Enquirer. In 1831 he moved to Boston and established The Boston Investigator one of the longest lived 1831-1904 freethought publications in the United States See Brown & Stein p. 33; he was tried four times and eventually convicted for his writings in the Dec. 20 1833 issue.
