Edizione originale; il testo è qui pubblicato in anteprima in vista della stampa in volume («Regole e saggi di metrica neo-classica», Firenze, 1900). Lievi segni del tempo, qualche restauro conservativo alle prime carte, ma bell’esemplare. In questo numero della «Rivista d’Italia», interamente dedicato alla poesia di Carducci, alle pp. 167-73 è stampato il breve saggio di Pascoli «Il Ritmo», incentrato sullo studio della metrica neo-classica, che sarebbe stato pubblicato di lì a breve in Pascoli, «Regole e saggi di metrica neo-classica, con una lettera di Giuseppe Chiarini», Milano-Palermo, Remo Sandron. Occorre segnalare che la pubblicazione in rivista avvenne ad insaputa di Pascoli, e per la sola iniziativa del curatore Chiarini, che così scrive nella nota al testo: «Egli [Pascoli] mi mandò gentilmente i fogli già tirati del suo libro sulla ‘metrica neo-classica’, che nella parte, diremo così, discorsiva, è una lettera indirizzata a me. [...] Allora mi dissi: la lettera in fin de’ conti è un po’ cosa mia; e perché dovrebbe dispiacere al Pascoli o all’editore, ch’io ne faccia conoscere un piccolo saggio, che invoglierà tutti del resto? [...] Così è avvenuto che il Pascoli, senza saperlo, si trova qui a prendere il caffè in una compagnia che certo non gli sarà sgradita».
