Book is in excellent condition. Binding is tight, solid and square in brown cloth with dark blue embossed print on the spine only. Covers have sharp upper corners with lowers lightly bumped, exterior shows no further blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, one 1/4" closed tear at upper edge only, small wrinkle at lower spine, light fading to spine; wrapped in protective clear cover.
Volume I is No 6 of 500 first and autographed editions signed and inscribed by the author. The inscription reads ' For the mother of our dear little daughter Mrs Arthur Guy with sincere appreciation and best wishes' No other marks. No creasing to covers or to spines. Three very clean very tight copies with very slightly faded very slightly foxed unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. Grey cloth corners and spines on blue stiff card boards with quality paper untrimmed on two edges. Volume II of identical format and condition is the fifth (trilogy) edition. Total of 603pp. Epic poems of the lives of US Presidents George Washington (The Commander-in-Chief) and Abraham Lincoln (The Emancipator) and of US Confederate General Robert E Lee (The Gray Cavalier).

Very handsome dark blue 1/2 leather bound 2nd edition, printed by W. Clowes, quite rare. Translated from the French, two volumes in one. This copy bears a D.G. Bridson bookplate on the front pastedown, gilt upper page block and gilt printing on spine. Corners and edges are very lightly scuffed, small mark to rear cover, otherwise mint condition. FIRST EDITION of a RARE TWO VOLUME record of Sir Austen Henry Layard's first adventurous journey to the East and residence among different tribes of Persia in the years 1840-1842. This book mentioned by the late 19th-century English novelist George Gissing in his diary as 'one of the most interesting books'. The author - Sir Austen Henry Layard GCB PC (1817-1894), was an eminent English traveler, archaeologist, cuneiformist, art historian, draughtsman, collector, politician and diplomat, best known as the excavator of Nimrud and of Nineveh, where he uncovered a large proportion of the Assyrian palace reliefs known, and in 1851 the library of Ashurbanipal. Contains two beautiful b&w illustrations, two frontispieces and three fold-out maps. [BOTH VOLUMES]: 205x140mm. 490+511 pages [+20]. Olive green cloth Hardcover. Gilt lettering and red and green patterns on front cover and spine. Text block edges age-stained. Cover yellowing and dirty/stained. Cover corners and spine edges bumped and worn. [SUMMARY]: This extremely rare first edition of a two-volume illustrated memoir of travels and residence in Persia by an illustrious Late Victorian England personality is in good condition.

Signed 'Best wishes Alan Ball' on half-title page. No other inscriptions or marks. Tiny crease to upper corner of rear cover, none to front, creasing to spine.
