1928 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY DETAILING A SUMMER SPENT BY AN ENGLISH WOMAN TEACHING AND TOURING IN PARIS FRANCE

On offer is a charming original manuscript dairy handwritten by a young British we believe woman in Paris France employed to teach English at the Lycee April 21st to August 22nd 1928. While the author's name is unknown even a casual read reveals the woman as each day is a complete daily record of everything she did from when she woke up until she went to bed including details of her duties where she went lessons and daily duties what she wore and even some 'insider' school politics or drama etc. making for a fascinating very detailed account of her experience at the Lycee in Paris. But much more than that the writer is an enthusiastic tourist too doing the French experience to the ultimate in her free time and describing it all in sparkling narrative. Historians and researchers of Paris in 1928 will acknowledge that the City of Light was at the epicentre of critical literature and art and the ascending star of post World War I Europe. The 7 x almost 5 inch leather notebook has some wear and top and bottom spine loss to the covers and the occasional marking where she kept flowers between the pages and some pages are loose but all complete. 1939 1948 MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A POST OFFICE WORKER IN SYRACUSE NEW YORK ATTENDING MEETINGS COMMITTEES AND GOING ABOUT HIS NORMAL BUSINESS OF MAKING SURE THE MAIL IS DELIVERED EVERY DAY

19390009172SYRACUSE NEW YORK NY. Good. 1939. On offer is an interesting book from a Post Office mail carrier first in 1939 then again in 1948. The entries take place from May 17th to October 311939 and then from June 30th to November 15 1948. In 1939 the entries are usually short snippets from the authors work as mail carrier in Syracuse New York delivering mail at different places around the city: The University of Syracuse Solvay Elmwood Park and others. The entries also concern the meetings surveys inspections committees and other events that happened to or around the author in Pre-WW2 Syracuse. In 1948 the entries become much more general both containing information about work in the Post Office now as a higher up employee in the Post Office. The entries contain information about the weather going to his lake cottage probably at Oneida Lake or Onondaga Lake and reports of the health and wellbeing of family members and coworkers as well as the normal business of working at the office dealing with more and more mail every day. The book contains roughly 50 handwritten pages. The book itself contains probably close to 200 pages in total. The green covers show some discoloration but are structurally very good as is the spine. The binding is tight and very good. The pages inside show little wear toning or foxing and all are in good condition. The ink is still dark and the handwriting is legible throughout. Text: 5/17/39. Request for survey of Lewiston Manor forwarded to Asst. Sullivan. Request that Mr. Sullivan consider asking Dept for authority to make two routes of No. 176. Unsatisfactory reports by Dora to Connely. Did the request myself.; 10/4/39. Called at Univ. Sta. all carriers returned on time. Supt. Barnes requested to withhold heavy pieces of paper mail from the carriers in the P.M. and work circs to them instead.Suggested to Asst. P.M. that a call window be opened for use of patrons calling at ____ instead of using P.P. collector were people wishing to mail P.P. are frequently blocked away from the ____ by persons calling.; Aug. 24 1948. Postmaster called Sullivan into his office and later told me he had given Sullivan a real going over regarding his lacking and failure to take care of his job. Maintained that his estimates were usually late extended service to Menlo Dr. without any record - doing it by phone; changed service in Westvale from Mt. to foot without notifying patrons and delaying other supervisors work by not promptly doing his own work. Sullivan said he would take the pledge. 19990009184BUCHAREST ROMANIA. Very Good. 1999. On offer is a recent diary written in 1999 of an American missionarys trip to preach in Romania. The author is a Baptist from North Carolina and speaks Romanian fluently. The diary is written almost completely in English. It begins in November 17 1999: Be ready. Some of this will be written in Romanian.My plane ride to Bucharest was a good one. When I arrived in Buc. at OJP. I had to wait 4 hours for my luggage. Ghita said someone would me me at OJP and take me to the train station. That was not the case. Eventually I made it to the station and waited 4 hours for my train most of which I spent outside in a large covered area. It was very cold - about -5° or 30°F and I was prepared for 22°C or 70°F per Ghitas instructions. My train ride was overnight in a sleeper car. It was the bumpiest ride of my life. In Romania he soon begins travelling through the country preaching. Last night we preached in a church in Varadia which is a village with a creek that is used as a road. The church as freezing b/c the deacon lit the fire 2 hours late. What an experience! For supper we had sausage and head cheese made from a fresh killed hog. This morning we preached in Carbonari.Tonight we will be at Stiepari to preach at a church w/ about 115 people. Tomorrow I will visit the high school and then be back in Timioara on Monday night. In addition to writing about preaching to the Romanian people the author writes often of the food he eats and the kindness customs and eccentricities of the Romanian people. He stays often with a woman named Maria who is the sister-in-law of a friend back home: I am not sure that Maria is a Christian. This makes things tough to deal with at times. The other night I wanted to sue the phone which I said I had a phone card and she began telling me that I was supposed to give her money for staying there electricity food etc. Well this is right for me to give her money but not for her to demand it.I would rather her give her house for and expect nothing. This way the money I give is a gift - a thank you for allowing me to stay in the home.Do for others expecting nothing in Return. When you get something act as if it was not expected - Do things from the heart not out of personal gain. He also writes of the upcoming millennium and that it will be interesting to see what Y2K brings. Y2K experts have listed Romania as one of the countries they think will suffer the most. He also watches a game between an American team Crossfire a sports ministream team based in Asheville NC and a team from Timioara. I was able to sit w/ two Mormon friends I met one in Bucharest. I have been praying for the HS to work on his heart and show him the light. This is a good time for that - he has heard Crossfire present the gospel 2x and he is homesick. He also quotes some bible verses at length and does some time interpreting what he believes they mean. Most days he spends preaching at churches or joining Romanian Christian youth groups for bible study. On one of his last days in Romania he gets into a conflict with some locals who scam him out of some money: The conductor of my car said I needed to pay for the extra luggage. I refused b/c I already bought 2 tickets which makes my cabin 1st class by myself. He wasnt going to let me on but than he did BTW: all this time I am praying. Then the smecher con-man said I need to either purchase an extra baggage billet or buy him or his friends 3 of them a beer. I didnt buy them but gave the money so I wouldn't have any trouble. This is a part of Romania I despise. He spends the last few pages reflecting on his trip in Romania and quoting and interpreting the bible. This young man really pours his heart out for his love of God and the importance of his religious message. The book is a total of 108 handwritten pages out of a 160-page or so book. The diary is written in a Sainsbury Reporters Notebook. The pages turn from top to bottom not left to right. The size is roughly 8 x 5 inches. The pages are in good condition and all still attached to the ring binding. No wear or tear or discoloration. One or two pages are folded up and can be easily unfolded. The handwriting is clean and legible throughout in blue and black ink. On offer is an incredible exhaustive and deeply detailed scrapbook and diary entitled The history of my career as a musician by pianist Wallace Wheeler. Beginning with his joining of the Omaha Musicians Association in October 1912 Wheeler traces his career as a classical piano player from his burgeoning days of professional engagements through his growing recognition and skill in the Omaha Symphony Orchestra and his election as president of the Midwest Conference of Musicians. His career is traced is written in exhaustive detail for almost twenty years from 1912 - 1929 The book is made up seemingly equally of written pages describing his professional engagements and newspaper cutouts concert programs photographs of himself and his band's letters and postcards received and various other ephemera directly relating to his musical career. The book is numbered up to page 80 and then there are roughly 40 pages or so of just ephemera newspaper clippings concert programs with his Wheelers name letters and such. The first engagement I ever played as a professional musician was on October 5 1912 at Treynor Iowa. On the engagement were - Frank Kiger - Violin; Jack Treen - Cornet; W.P. Jackson - Drums; Wheeler - Piano. I played with tes three men almost altogether until Jan. 26 1913 when Louis Mareus opened up the Majestic Theater in Council Bluffs after having it completely remodeled and redecorated. We played here until July 2 1913. Though the writing is fairly matter-of-fact on his career when and where Wheeler played who he played with what type of music was played there are also parts where adds additional comments to his professional life: The five months we played there the policy of the house was for the greater part of the time pictures and vaudeville. About six weeks of tabloid musical shows was the only interruption. ; That season 1913-1914 was a good one for me I made a good living in proportion to the times and look back on those days with much pleasure.; In December 1915 I was elected secretary of the Omaha Musicians Assn and took office the first Tuesday in January 1916. I served that one year and bowed out not being a candidate for reelection.The season of 1915-1916 at the Nicholas Theatre was not a very profitable one so we played there off and on more off than on filling in with other work. For the most part in the early years of his career Wheeler takes on semi-steady jobs working theatres often playing for silent movies hotels and odd jobs to make a living. In each new engagement he always writes who he played with. In June 1917 Wheeler enlists as a 3rd Class Musician the band of the 6th Nebraska U.S. Band He writes the names of the entire band all 30 or so men on cornets clarinets drums basses and saxes. He serves with this outfit until early 1918 when he transfers to another band the 135th U.S. Band. He writes The names of all the members of this band I will attempt to list if my memory serves me correctly. Amazingly or perhaps by copying from a diary or something he is able to write the names of over 50 men in the band. Ernest Meyers is the band leader. With this outfit he visits France where the band is broken up. After the break up he attends the Ecole de Musique du Regiment in Chaumont Haute-Marne France. Here he studied bassoon with Antoine Mathieu 1st bassoon of the Paris. Opera Orchestra and conducting under Andre Caplet conductor of opera at the Grand Opera in Paris. He then joins the band of the 306th Field Artillery 77th Division with whom he returns to the U.S. in April 1919. Back in Omaha he takes work at the Boyd Theatre mentioning that it's opening night September 28 1919 is the night of the famous riot when a mob nearly destroyed the courthouse. This is the Omaha Race Riot he is referring to when thousands of whites attempted to hang the Mayor of Omaha and then set fire to the Douglas County Courthouse in downtown Omaha. The next few years are filled with a similar pattern. Wheeler finds a job for a couple months with a theater or hotel then that closes he does a bit of jobbing then finds another engagement for a few months. In 1925 he spends much of the year working with five elementary school orchestras. He writes I find this work with the youngsters very interesting and I take a great deal of pleasure in it. It is inspiring what one can do with six seventh and eighth graders. I did some of this work last year and find the idea spreading and interesting increasing from year to year.The main object of this work is to give the children some idea of ensemble playing before they reach high-school age. Their reaction to our efforts is proof indeed of the importance and desirability of this sort of work. During this time he is also composing his own original music. Around page 45 there are a dozen or so pages of newspaper clippings and the occasional description by Wheeler. This clippings deal mostly with his Summer 1926 engagement of music at Peony Park an amusement park and concert venue in Omaha. Wallace Wheeler and His Band play from May until the end of October. The next few years follow the same as before. Wheeler goes from engagement to engagement usually staying for a season or two and then moving on. He usually leaves pleasantly but he does say of one engagement: Well! I closed at the Riviera on Thursday August 30 1918 and felt very much like a prisoner doing about ten years and is suddenly released. After more pages of programs and newspaper clippings a long entry begins Santa Monica Cal. July 26 1929. Here we are again little book and much water has flowed beneath the bridge since the program was pasted on the preceding page. First of all - when the aforementioned program was under rehearsal I had a personal squabble with Herr Harmati. It was a very regrettable incident and I am sorry that I lost my temper - not without provocation in my own opinion - but none the less a very unfortunate happening. I bear the Signor no ill-will and still consider him a fine musician however widely our ideas diverge on the manner of handling an orchestra. So much for that! Wheeler sells his house and possessions and moves to California. On the trip he is accompanied by his wife and Ben Nye who was a renowned American makeup artist for the Hollywood film industry from the 1930s to the early 1980s. They find an apartment in Whittier California in Los Angeles County. All we ask is a chance to earn a decent living and achieving that we will give thanks to the Great Presence on high and after all these annoying vicissitudes shall dedicate ourselves to the building of a new life beneath the ever smiling sky of Southern California. He finishes: Here shall we pause little book. Santa Monica Cal. Fri. July 26 1929. However there is another entry in which Wheeler updates the book written on November 21 1929 a month after the beginning of the Great Depression. He states that he finds a job in the arranging department of the Fox Film Corp. at the Fox Hill studios in Los Angeles.This so far is a very good position well paid and more desirable than the theatre game on account of having evenings and Sundays off. The Great Depression seems to not be making an immediate effect on him but whether or not his livelihood at the Fox Film Corp. lasts is unknown. Fox Film Corp. would eventually become the company 20th Century Fox which still exists today. After this final entry the scrapbook has roughly 60 pages devoted entirely to programs newspaper clippings and photographs all concerning Wallace Wheeler and his life. In its entirety the scrapbook is over 220 pages in length in a 3-ring binder format with a blank board cover. A number of pages are detached especially near the beginning. On offer is a super manuscript relic of an early 20th Century trip to the Central American country of Panama written by author lecturer and professional world traveler William A. Brooks of Wellesley Hills Massachusetts. This travel journal is typed likely from handwritten notes and likely prepared for publication though we cannot find any such publications. Brooks was a noted speaker and casual research finds numerous mentions of his holding lectures about his various trips from the early 1900s through the 1920s. He has a wonderful narrative style moving from sophisticated enthusiast to folksy world wise traveller. This manuscript is titled: "Discovering Panama by the Caminos Macionales." On offer is a super original manuscript autobiography handwritten by Mr. David Buel Jr. who retrospectively recorded his memories and anecdotes etc. in 1857 a mere three years before his death. The journal is a fascinating detailed sketch of his family travel life events genealogy etc. starting with his birth in October 1784 through 1830s but we note 1853 references on the last page. He writes of being a member of the Constitutional Congress of 1821 his mother's death in 1826 a voyage to Savannah on the Steam Boat George Washington travel to Martinique and Nevis in 1812 and much more. The 8" x 10" leather bound lined ledger book has narrative on the first 40 pages. Bumping to extremities. Some loosening to hinges. Marbled endpapers. Overall G. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES: One online source provides: Hon. David Buel Jr. Born Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. Died in Troy. N.Y. August 16 1860. Mr. Buel's obit stated: "For more than a generation says the Troy Daily Whig Judge BUEL has been one of the best known and highly esteemed citizens of Troy. Prominent at the Bar he was as well for many years very active and efficient in all public concerns in both city and country. He always enjoyed public confidence and was most faithful and devoted to any cause which enlisted his energies. In 1821 he was a member of the Convention which revised the Constitution of this State. He distinguished himself in that body in the discussion of several important questions. He held the office of Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for several years receiving the office first from the old Council of Appointment. Ill health obliged him to resign this position in 1827. Spending some three years in the South soon after in pursuit of health he returned and devoted himself to his profession avoiding public life. In 1842 he was appointed one of the State Regents of the University which office he held at the time of his death. We cannot enumerate the various positions of honor and trust connected with business charitable and religious interests which the deceased held in later years. They were numerous and every duty belonging to them was discharged with rigid fidelity. In religious faith he was an Episcopalian and for many years to the time of his decease he was senior Warden of St. Paul's Church. Judge BUEL was born in Litchfield Conn. Oct. 22 1784. His father DAVID BUEL moved to Troy in 1798 and resided here until his death in 1836. DAVID Jr. entered Williams College in the Fall of 1802 and graduated in 1805 and soon after began the study of the law at Albany in the office of DAVID JONES where his fellow-students were JOHN C. SPENCER and WHEELER BARNES; He concluded his studies in the office of ABRAM VAN VECHTEN. He commenced the practice of the law of Troy in 1809 and remained an industrious laborer in the profession until 1854 when failing health compelled him to abandon it. Though for a long time feeble under the weight of years it was only last week that his last illness was deemed of an alarming nature. He endured all with patience and without complaint. Alongside classic inclusions such as Aphra Behn Cleopatra and Catharine de Medici Remarkable Female Characters details the lives and accomplishments of diverse individuals such as the androgynous soldier-spy Charlotte d'Éon. It is bound as the second volume in the set the first being a counterpart on noteworthy men. Collective biographies of noteworthy people often referred to as "eccentric biographies" were a popular genre in 19th-century Britain and America. The public had "a fascination with eccentric characters" as "was reflected in reports and discussion in newspapers in works of local history and in fiction" Gregory p. 343. The anonymous author is often nuanced when describing women who defied societal norms. They write admiringly of the Chevalière d'Éon 1728-1810 an author diplomat spy and soldier who lived openly as a man and a woman. D'Éon's entry is one of those accompanied by a portrait which faces page 118. The book is also sympathetic to the movement for women's rights commenting that Mary Astell "justly observed" the "want of knowledge in her sex" and complimenting her "uncommon assuidity" to her studies p. 9. Of Mary Wollstonecraft's struggles and unconventional lifestyle the author writes that "the history of this singular woman til towards the latter period of her life has been that of one continued struggle with adverse circumstances. with heroic fortitude" p. 141. Born in 1854 in Bergen Norway Rasmus Rasmussen was an accomplished sailor by the time he signed on to the ship Debora in 1879 headed to Aldabra an atoll in the Indian Ocean where the group on board hoped to establish a Norwegian colony based on the teachings of Hans Nielsen Hauge a Norwegian minister. Before reaching its destination however the expedition ended prematurely in Madagascar with some aboard the Debora remaining there while others settled in the British colony of Port Natal Durban . Rasmussen wrote an account of the journey under the name Sailor James. "Viking" is an account of his journey as a working sailor aboard the ship Viking a Norwegian replica that set sail in 1893 bound for the Chicago World Exhibition 1894 . Said to be the only Viking ship replica in modernity and the only Viking ship to set sail in more than 1 000 years it is now located in Geneva Illinois its full restoration stalled due to lack of funding. ; . Parker #8 BR Squadron RCAF originally of Toronto. Parker does a super job detailing his service beginning January 1st 1944 with being trained and educated in the art of aerial warfare putting in hours and hours of flight time and on gunnery firing many 100s of rounds near daily in practice at Fingal Ontario. Flying over Lake Erie is a freezing cold experience he notes without complaining. Prior to posting to British Columbia he manages a visit to family and friends in Toronto for dancing at the Granite Club a bit of a distance from his home on Royal York Road. There is also a dance at Women's College Hospital. In all 1944 is completely full describing daily his training and duties: rifle and revolver sighting time in the turrets flights Morse Code training and tests camera gun exercise boxing with a PTI Sergeant his trip to Vancouver Port Hardy Kelowna and much much more. Historians and Researchers of the era will be hard pressed to find a more conscientious diarist recording his daily life as an RCAF Sergeant. 1945 is filled sporadically from Jan 1 to March and then a final entry noting VE Day on May 7th 1945. The 5½ x 3¼ inch official RCAF diaries are in very good condition with some general ageing save for the 1945 book that has a small puncture on the spine. 1938-1965 Three Diaries of a Mystery Long Island New York Woman Following 27 Years of Her Life

0012250Long Island New York United States New York State. Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is a superb collection of three diaries kept by the same woman over a span of 27 years. How remarkable to get a glimpse into the life of a woman living through the massive changes of the world between 1938 and 1965. These three journals were kept by the same woman who lived in a small village on Long Island NY. Although there is much detail about her daily life in each volume she remains unidentified. There are hints that she might have been married and that she had children but she makes no direct references to specific family members. Our informal research has not found any additional biographical information about her. Nonetheless over the course of three diaries she gives us a sense of her life her role as a woman and her experience in the context of the culture within which she lived. The first journal covers August 6-December 31 1938. From context we know that she lived in the small village of Village Spring on Long Island NY. Her entries are chatty and she comments a great deal on things happening in her immediate life the war effort and happenings in her community. Some excerpts follow: Saw the Aquitania and the Normandie at Sandy Hook . I took Bill and what a day he had. We went to New York & took the Central R. R. Boat at Cedar St. Down the bay to Sandy Hook. Bill was in like 7th Heaven with delight on the boat saluted the sailors to their amusement. We were back by 5PM. Bill went to sleep on the subway. Much warmer tonight and a lovely rain came Aug 31 1938. Oh what a day of whistling wind lashing rain. Tales of injury flocks of wrecks a tropical hurricane lashed Long Island NY area. NJ Conn badly hitservice not running as the power housewas flooded shutting off the power Sept 21 1938. Still cool. How awful to read of the inhumane treatment of Jews and Catholics in Germany. It seems as if we are living at the time of the Spanish Inquisition Nov 16 1938. Was cold 18 above went out to VSO Saw Bill in school Staid an hour in Miss Hotchkiss room. Saw the Brockhams Went up later to dinner with John & Bill & Betty Carolyn was not there. Came back tonight as tomorrow will be busy as John comes home soon Dec 15 1938. We catch up with our author eight years later in 1946. This journal is actually a ledger book that she has used as a diary. She keeps the diary from Jan-Dec but does not write every day. Some excerpts follow: John is writing feeling better then when he was at school and college he writes about falling for a French girl Jan 14 1946. We had lobster dinner for Mrs. Barber its her birthday. Jack Mets Killer was found in BK yesterday. Boy did the police beat him up. Jacks funeral today in Valley Stream Feb 7 1946. Another nice day. I took in a huge bunch of Iris and Rose Begonias and Corn flowers. Edna Passe came May 28 1946. Went to Wash Mkt cheese we used to get for 20 cents a lb is now 85 cents peanut butter is 39 cents a lb and Creamery butter is 1.00 if you can get it Oct 10 1946. The final diary covers 1964-1965. Again we get insight into our authors daily life the lives of those in her community and some commentary on global events. Excerpts follow: Once more worked and weeded and tied up the tomatoes again they put out such long branches. The Negro uprising in NY & Brooklyn is aweful July 15 1964 This is a reference to the Harlem Riots of July 1964. 90-deg Went to Village Shopped. Met Carolyn then went & paid Village Tax & to bank to pay tel bill September 29 1964. Very cold down to 20 its the first freeze since last April. Memorial for J. F. Kennedy its the 1st anniversary Nov 22 1964. Did a lot of baking. Bill Gunderson gave me some apples and I made jelly Feb 27 1965. 24 years today since Pearl Harbor and here we are in the awful Viet Kong War Dec 7 1965. For a social historian this is an excellent long-term view of a womans life. Through her eyes one can see the steady changes that are unfolding as life in America changes. The diaries measure 8.5 x 5.5 12 x 7.5 and 9.75 x 7.5 inches respectively. They range from 30% to 90% complete. The first journal is comprised of 1/2 size 3-hole punched loose leaf paper bound together with a cord. There are no covers. The pages are in good condition.
