Two thousand ciphered letters and telegrams evoke the politics of Cavour in the most dramatic period of Italy?s emancipation from the Asburg dominion: the diplomatic campaign leading Austria towards an armed intervention, the liberating war with the support of Napoleon III?s army as far as the sudden armistice of Villafranca, resignation of the Count, confined to private life, humiliated by the evident hostility of King Vittorio Emanuele II. 2575 gr. xii-1412 p.
